Jane Eyre, the musical, had a long and bumpy road to Broadway. The World Premiere of the musical actually took place in Wichita, Kansas in the autumn of 1995. John Caird and Paul Gordon traveled to Wichita, along with principal cast members Marla Schaffel, Anthony Crivello (the original Rochester), Don Richard and Angela Lockett. Remaining roles were chosen from the ranks of Wichita's theatrical community with young Jane being double cast as well as the large ensemble of schoolgirls for the scenes at Brocklehurst's school. The musical was well received and a subsequent recording of this rendition allowed the creative team and their backers to slowly move the project towards New York.
