Jan Brand
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Johannes Henricus Brand (popularly known as Jan Brand) (6 December 1823, Cape Town–14 July 1888, Bloemfontein) was the fourth President of the Orange Free State, from 2 February 1864 to 1888.
He was the son of Christoffel Brand, the speaker of the Cape legislative assembly.
Because of his support for their republican ideals, he emigrated to the Orange Free State and was elected as its President in 1864.
In 1871 he opposed the British annexation of the town of Kimberley without success.
