The university came of age under the direction of Prof. Abdol Ghayoom Ebrahimi, who was the first University Chancellor during 1988-2000.

This university started its work with three majors (Civil Engineering, Biology and Agricultural Engineering) and 60 students in 1988. It was then situated in Gorgan's Jorjan street. Today the university has grown both in quantity and quality. At present, it has 107 faculty members, about 6000 students in B.S. and M.S. of 48 majors.

Prof Dr Abdol Ghayoom Ebrahimi, founder of Islamic Azad University of Gorgan, has been an ex-visiting professor of the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign in the United States before. He served as the first chancellor of Islamic Azad University of Gorgan for twelve years and is now a professor of Plant Pathology there.The Minister of Science, Research and Technology (MSRT) of the I.R. Iran has selected him recently as a memeber board of discriminatives for the scientific advancement of professors serving in the University of Golestan, Gorgan.He has received many awards, such as research grant of the National Science Foundation (NSF) of the United States, letter of appreciation of deputy of the leader of the I.R. Iran, letter of appreciation of the president of the I.R. Iran, Minister of Agriculture, the President of Islamic Azad University and governors of Golestan.

Founded in 1988, the campus is located in Gorgan, Golestan Province, occupying about 40 acres in the city of Gorgan in the lush and pleasant touristic province of Golestan, nothern of Iran. Islamic Azad University of Gorgan has played a key role in developing the city of Gorgan so far.

At Present, Islamic Azad University of Gorgan is offering over 500 courses in 48 degree programs. The university awards bachelor's degrees and master's degrees each year. The average class consists of 35 students (not including lab classes and discussion sections led by graduate student instructors).

Academic staff of the university has consisted of 107 faculty members includes Full Professors, Associate Professors, Assistant Professors and Instructors.

Islamic Azad University of Gorgan has graduated many students who go on to earn doctorates in Iran and the other counries, such as the United States.The acceptance rate to enterance examinations of master's degree which is competitive in all over the country is notable. For example, [1], graduated of Islamic Azad University of Gorgan, is now a graduate student in the Molecular, Cellular and Developmental Biology (MCDB) Department of University of California at Santa Barbara, CA, in the United States.
