Interstate 805 (abbreviated I-805) is a three-digit interstate route in southern California.

[edit] Route description
I-805, also known as the Jacob Dekema Freeway or simply, the 805, serves the San Diego metropolitan area and acts as an alternate loop route of Interstate 5. The southern terminus departs from I-5 just north of the U.S.-Mexico border at San Ysidro, California. I-805 then goes through Chula Vista, California, National City, California, and then the North Park, Clairemont, University City and Mira Mesa Neighborhoods of San Diego, California. The northern terminus is in Sorrento Valley, San Diego, California, and there is an HOV lane that goes through the merge to rejoin I-5. Eight to ten lanes throughout, Interstate 805 has evolved into a busy commuter route from the International Border into the exploding South Bay bedroom communities of Chula Vista (including Rancho del Rey and Eastlake) and National City. The freeway passes through the Mid-City community of San Diego, then leads into the relatively new business parks at the Golden Triangle (via Governor Drive and La Jolla Village Drive) and Sorrento Valley. The freeway continues to be very busy as it rejoins Interstate 5 near Carmel Valley. As more companies locate along the route of Interstate 805, more traffic utilizes the route as an important connector to get from home to work. In addition to commuter traffic, the freeway is one of two north-south freeways that reach Mexico. Traffic to and from the border is also very common along Interstate 805.
[edit] Future aspirations
There is much construction going on at the northern terminus of I-805, with a truck bypass being built to serve local traffic such as traffic for State Route 56. This work will be completed in the late 2000s. Also, there are plans to reconstruct the I-5-I-805 interchange as well as the addition of 2 HOV Lanes between State Route 52 and Mira Mesa Boulevard.

Plans for the route was passed in legislature in 1959 as Legislative Route Number 241. It was soon after approved as a chargeable interstate in 1958, then subsequently declared a signed state route in 1964. The construction of the route was completed in 1975. Named after Jacob Dekema, a pioneering force from Caltrans who helped shape the San Diego freeway system, Interstate 805 was completed by the mid-1970s, including a towering bridge over Mission Valley and Interstate 8 (an engineering marvel, including San Diego County's only symmetrical stack interchange).
