International Protection
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The International protection or the degree of protection IP (International Protection) in the electrical engineering is a code which shows the level of protection against accidental o intentional contact (with the human body or other objects), and the level of protection against water contact. The code is applicable to systems working with a nominal electrical tension not above 72,5 KiloVolt.
This coding, created by the standard EN60529 is the following
At the end of IP follows two digits and two optional letters whose meaning is:
0 | No protection | |
1 | Protection against solid bodies of 50 mm or below | Protected against contact with the back of the hand |
2 | Protection against solid bodies with dimension not above 12mm | Protected against access with a finger |
3 | Protection against solid bodies with dimension not above 2.5mm | Protected against access with a tool |
4 | Protection against solid bodies with dimension not above 1mm | Protected against access with a metallic wire |
5 | Protection against dust | Protected against access with a thin metallic wire |
6 | Totally protected against dust | Protected against access with a thin metallic wire |
0 | Not protected |
1 | Vertical fall of water drops |
2 | Vertical fall of water with a maximum inclination of 15° |
3 | Rain |
4 | Sprinkling of water |
5 | Stream of water |
6 | Waves |
7 | Possible immersion |
8 | Possible total immersion |
a | Protected against contact with the back of the hand |
b | Protected against access with a finger |
c | Protected against access with a tool |
d | Protected against access with a metallic wire |
h | Equipment under High Voltage |
m | Water-proof with the equipment working |
s | Equipment protected even with water infiltration |
w | Suitable to work in the specified atmosferic conditions |
[edit] Equivalence with NEMA coding
NEMA coding National Electrical Manufacturers Association can be compared with the IP classification as shown in the correspondence below. NEMA contains also other characteristics for the protection against corrosion. For additional information refer to NEMA official docs.
- NEMA 1 = IP10
- NEMA 2 = IP11
- NEMA 3 = IP54
- NEMA 4 = IP56
- NEMA 4X = IP66
- NEMA 6 = IP67
- NEMA 12 = IP52
- NEMA 13 = IP54
