Indiana State Road 2

State Road 2 in the U.S. State of Indiana is an east-west route running from the Illinois border at Illinois Route 17 east to the outskirts of South Bend, Indiana at the U.S. 20/31 freeway, also known as the St. Joseph Valley Parkway. This is a distance of 80.98 miles (130.32 km).

Indiana 2 has largely been replaced by the Indiana Toll Road (80/90) and by U.S. Route 20. Indiana 2 appears to be part of an old alignment from Kankakee, Illinois to South Bend, Indiana, and runs more diagonally than other east-west state highways in Indiana.

In Valparaiso, Indiana 2 has been rerouted around the downtown and central business districts of the city. Instead of traveling through the city along Washington Street, Indiana 2 multiplexes with U.S. Route 30 and the Valparaiso Bypass (State Road 49).

Just east of LaPorte, U.S. 20 and Indiana SR 2 "switch alignments" at a lighted intersection. That is, U.S. 20 follows the north and west legs of the intersection, while Indiana 2 follows the south and east legs.

Several times in its history, Indiana 2 has run along the path of the Lincoln Highway.

West to east, the SR 2 passes through the following communities, and intersects with highways at those locations:

Belshaw — U.S. Route 41 (multiplexed for 1 mile (1.6 km))
Orchard Grove — State Road 55
Hebron — U.S. Route 231 (multiplexed for 0.5 mile (0.8 km)), western terminus of State Road 8
Valparaiso — U.S. Route 30 (Morthland Avenue) and State Road 49 (multiplexed with both highways for a combined distance of 3 miles (5 km))
Westville — U.S. Route 6, U.S. Route 421 (multiplexed for less than a mile (1.6 km))
LaPorte — U.S. Route 35, State Road 4, State Road 39 (multiplexed for a few hundred yards)
South Bend — U.S. Route 20/U.S. Route 31 (St. Joseph Valley Parkway)

[edit] Old Indiana State Route 2

Until the completion of the St. Joseph Valley Parkway around the South Bend - Elkhart area, Indiana 2 continued to downtown South Bend, mostly along Western Avenue (which remains, but no longer has state highway markers). State Road 2 originally followed the Lincoln Highway to Fort Wayne before US 33 supplanted it east of downtown South Bend.
