Howard High School, in its 55th year, serves families from Ellicott City, Elkridge, and Columbia, Maryland. The population is both culturally and economically diverse with over three quarters of our graduates enrolling in postsecondary institutions.

Currently, Howard High School is under renovation. The 2005–2006 school year opened with a new music/drama wing partially ready for use, a new front entrance, and a temporary cafeteria located in a space that will eventually become the auxiliary gym. In November 2005, the new administrative wing and main office opened. In December 2005, the auditorium opened with the winter concert, play and dance performance. During the summer of 2006, the media center moved into the temporary cafeteria and renovation started with an expected completion date of January 2007. The new cafeteria with a multi-story open atrium and new instructional wing were ready for start of the 2006-2007 school year.

As each phase of this three-year project is completed, Howard High School embraces the changes with a respect for its history and tradition. Our Lion maintains his place of honor in our front lobby, a symbol of our commitment to graduating civic-minded students of character.

Like all other Howard County high schools, Howard High has a yearlong schedule that provides students with the opportunity to earn seven credits. Our daily schedule is composed of five 50 minutes periods and one pair of alternating classes of 100 minutes each. We encourage all of our students to complete their four-year high school program in creative ways including concurrent enrollment, new programs offered at the Applied Physics Lab and mentorships. We encourage the acquisition of knowledge that will offer multiple options for college or career upon graduation. The school improvement process drives the instructional programs offered at Howard High in close alignment with HCPSS goals and the initiatives of the Maryland State Department of Education. Our School Improvement Team and our Leadership Team focus on data driven decision making that will identify, develop, and implement strategies and programs to benefit and enhance the achievement of all students in all student groups. The continuous professional development of our staff, in alignment with these goals and strategies, is a top priority in order to better serve the needs of all of our students. We pride ourselves in working to create an educational environment that will improve our community and the world at large.
