Hot One is a US / Canadian rock band formed in 2005. Its members are film composer/rocker Nathan Larson, songstress Emm Gryner, drummer Kevin March, and guitarist Jordan Kern.

The band has a glam-rocky postpunk sound, and sassy, overtly political lyrical content.

Former and current bands associated with Hot One include Shudder to Think, Guided By Voices and The Dambuilders, among others.

Hot One's self-titled debut album was released October 10th 2006.

Hot One came together in October 2005 out of desperation.

Not because its members hadn't had their fill of rock-life with their combined years of experience in underground bands. And not because these folks aren't comfortably ensconced in careers elsewhere.

The members of Hot One came together to lend an urgent voice of dissent in an increasingly lopsided world. Maybe to make some sort of difference. Or maybe just to make themselves feel better.

Plus, it feels good to play really loud.

Nathan Larson had almost forgotten this fact. Having grown up in the Dischord records dominated punk scene of Washington DC, Nathan spent the '90s as the aggressive lead guitarist in the controversial love-em-or-hate em Shudder To Think. He split with the band in '99 and went on to a create scores for such films as Boys Don't Cry, Velvet Goldmine, Dirty Pretty Things, Tigerland, Palindromes, The Woodsman, and Little Fish, among others. This was all well and good, but making passive made-to-order music in such tumultuous times left Larson a little cold, and the summer of 2005 he reckoned it was time to take some direct action.

Larson dusted off his guitar and called on a like-minded friend to play bass: Emm Gryner, a fiercely independent Canadian singer-songwriter with several self-released records, and a stint backing up David Bowie among her many credits. Emm brought with her not only her spirit and musicality, but also the young guitarist Jordan Kern, whose production skills and band ESCALATE are well known in his native Toronto.

Next to sign on was Larson's ex-bandmate (in both Shudder To Think and the short-lived indie supergroup Mind Science Of the Mind), Kevin March, who can also be credited as an ex-member of The Dambuilders and Those Bastard Souls . Kevin had served as the drummer for Guided By Voices over the last years of the band's life, and was looking for his next move. The lineup was complete and the four got to work in earnest.

Between October and late December, the band wrote the material which would comprise their debut album. Recordings were made in Williamsburg, Brooklyn, in the early days of 2006. DIY'ing it to a fault, the album was tracked and mixed entirely by the band themselves, retaining the music's ferocity, urgency, and sense of constructive outrage, while tight-roping between high and lo fidelity.

HOT ONE observes and aims to continue the tradition of music as a medium for social protest, and though glammish rock in sound has attitude comparable to the Clash, Public Enemy, Psychic TV, Woody Guthrie, Minor Threat, the MC5.
