Holyrood R.C. Secondary, commonly referred to as Holyrood, is a Catholic secondary school in the south-side of Glasgow, Scotland. The school was completed in 1936 and originally functioned as a grammar school with entry dependent on a high mark in the 11 plus examination. In c.1971 the exam was abolished and all Scottish state schools became equal in terms of status, curriculum offered and examinations taken.
The school has a pupil roll of approximately 2,300 and 150 teachers making it the largest secondary level education institute in Europe.[1]

Famous alumni of the school include Bishop John Mone of the Paisley diocese, Top Class 400m runner Lee McConnell, Fran Healy (lead singer of Travis), Scottish stand-up comic Des Clarke, political activist Patrick McAleer, and Baroness Helena Kennedy the esteemed lawyer, human rights activist and chair of the British Council.[2]

Holyrood is well catered for in terms of sporting facilities. It has full access to the Holyrood Sports Centre during school hours (the centre is used for community purposes at night), a pool within the main school building and several outdoor pitches.

In recent years the school community has been rocked by two scandals involving teachers and pupils. The first involved an Art teacher, Kevin Coyle, and one of his pupils. The second involved a Music teacher, Bryan Marshall and a pupil at the school that he did not teach-Jacqueline Livingston. He is currently suspended whilst the City Council and the Archdiocese conduct an investigation into his behavioiur.[3]

As the school is Roman Catholic it is served by a Religious education (RE) department and a chaplain, Father David Wallace of Our Lady of Consolation Church, in Govanhill.
