I am researching the early Eropean history of Australia.The economics of Australia were based on whaling and wool particularly on wool from the Merino Sheep of Spanish origins or maybe Morrocon. thirteen Merino type sheep were purchased from a widow at Cape Town by the British Royal Navy Captains Waterhouse & Kent, twenty six sheep purchased plus three given to Lt. King who was to be a Governor of Australia. The purchase was in 1797. Only Waterhouse's thirteen sheep arived alive in Australia. The above is from a july 1806 letter from Waterhouse to Sir Joseph Banks about the event. My request is who was the widow? some sources, the quoted letter is one says the husband was a Colonel Gordon who was known to Lt. King, other sources say the name was spelt Gordan. The only Gordon That I can find record of is Captain Gordon of the 95th. Rifles who died in a riding accident on8th. March 1796.
