Hard Spell
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Hard Spell first aired on BBC One in the United Kingdom in late 2004. The show was a televised spelling bee for children between the ages of eleven and fourteen, presented by Eamonn Holmes. It held heats in different parts of the country and eventually the grand final, at the end of which Gayathri Kumar was crowned Britain's best young speller.
Notable spellers apart from Gayathri include Nisha Abraham from Wolverhampton, Mark Jackson from Cambridge, Dominic Harvey from Bath, Sarah Williams from Penzance and Anthony Collins from Barnes.
As the show was such a success, Hard Spell came on television screens again at Christmas 2005 with the same age group range and the same presenter, Eamonn Holmes. In the final, the winner was Niall O'Neill from Northern Ireland who won £10,000 of holiday vouchers and media equipment for his school.
Also in late 2005, the BBC aired Star Spell, a similar programme based on its predecessor but which featured minor celebrities competing against each other[1].
