GTE South

GTE South, Inc. is an entirely separate company of GTE Systems of the South, a d/b/a name for Contel of the South, Inc., who now does business as Verizon Mid-States.
GTE South, Inc. is a Verizon operating company serving a former GTE region. GTE South originally served Alabama, Georgia, Kentucky, North Carolina, South Carolina, Tennessee, Virginia, and West Virginia.
GTE South underwent several changes in the states it served, including:
- In 1993, GTE traded its Georgia operations with Alltel's Illinois operations.
- In 1994, GTE sold its operations in West Virginia and Tennessee to Citizens Communications. GTE also acquired Contel, and Contel of Kentucky, Contel of North Carolina, Contel of South Carolina, and Contel of Virginia were merged into GTE South.
- In 2000, Bell Atlantic bought GTE, forming Verizon. GTE South, Inc. was renamed "GTE South, Inc. dba Verizon South, Inc."
- In 2002, Verizon sold its operations in Alabama to CenturyTel. Verizon also sold its operations in Kentucky to Alltel.
Verizon South, Inc. is a current operating company of Verizon serving former GTE and Contel regions in North Carolina, South Carolina, and Virginia.
