Grupo Santander (LSE: BNC) (NYSE: STD) is a marketing name of Banco Santander Central Hispano and its subsidiaries. It consists of a vast network of banking organisations with the majority based across Europe and Latin America. These are either Banco Santander brands or companies that have been acquired by the group. The most recent of these has been the acquisition of the UK bank Abbey in September 2004. The Santander Central Hispano brand consists of 126,000 employees, 63 million customers, 10,000 branches and 2.6 million shareholders. Retail banking - the main aspect of Santander's operations - generates 82% of the group's profit.

[edit] Shareholdings
Shareholders of banks acquired by Grupo Santander Central Hispano retain the same number of shares they bought originally, but they are renamed to Grupo Santander. The most recent example is with Abbey National shares, where the bank was delisted from the London Stock Exchange and then relisted, but under the name of Banco Santander Central Hispano.

The group owns 25% of the common stock of Sovereign Bank and is expected to buy the remaining shares according to Soverign CEO Jay Sidhu. If they purchase the entire bank it would probably be renamed and Grupo Santander would have it's first retail bank in the USA.
