Gob are a punk band from Vancouver, British Columbia formed in 1994. They are currently working on their 6th album. The band's trademark sound relies heavily on crunchy, distorted guitars as well as slightly distorted basslines and Gabe Mantle's hardcore/metal style of drumming. Their hit single "I Hear You Calling" was featured on Electronic Arts's NHL 2002 video game. Other songs that have been featured in EA video games are "Give Up The Grudge" (Madden 2004), "I've Been Up These Steps" (NHL 2003), and "Sick With You" (NHL 2003). The band has appeared on several outdoor music festivals, the most well-known being Vans's Warped Tour.

[edit] Early History

The roots of Gob trace back to Theo Goutzinakis (guitars, vocals) and Tom Thacker (guitars, vocals) playing in a band called Tommy's Biscuit. Gob formed out of the ashes of Tommy's Biscuit in late 1993. The band formed in Langley, British Columbia, Canada, after Tom and Theo met drummer 'Wolfman' Pat Integrity. The band released its self-titled, 9 track EP in 1994. They were quite successful, in 1995, after Too Late... No Friends was released. A few of their videos began receiving airplay on Much Music at this time. Shortly after releasing their first album, Gob released Green Beans and Almonds, a 7-inch, 500 press, 4 song vinyl. Unfortunately, drummer Wolfman Pat left the band to spend more time with his family, and bassist Jamie left soon after.

Shortly after the departure of Gob's rhythm section, Craig Wood (bass guitar) and Gabe Mantle (drums, also plays in Vancouver hardcore band Brand New Unit) joined the band, replacing the former rhythm section. In 1997, a 7-inch Gob/McRackins split was pressed, along with Ass Seen on TV, a Gob/Another Joe split. Soon after, in 1998, they released How Far Shallow Takes You. This then led to their signing with Nettwerk Management, who re-released the album (with a bonus track, "All We Are") in 1999. The album was graced with strong sales in Canada, and the band obtained a cult following in the extreme sports (skateboarding, BMX biking, snowboarding) circuits. The main single from this album was "What To Do", and was featured on compilation CDs in cases of Molson Canadian beer in the summer of 1999.

Gob also covered The Rolling Stones' "Paint It Black", which was featured in the Kevin Bacon movie, Stir of Echoes in the late 1990s as well as the 2004 miniseries ’Salem’s Lot. This song is a popular download on P2P sharing programs, and helped Gob achieve a whole new fanbase.

The band began work on their third full-length album, The World According To Gob, in 1999 and wrapped up in 2001, releasing it through Nettwerk. This album was Gob's most commercially successful album to date, however, it showed the band taking a slight departure from their punk rock roots and immersing themselves more in pop-punk. Singles released from WATG include "For The Moment", "I Hear You Calling", and "No Regrets".

In 2002, Gob recorded the F.U. EP, which featured re-recorded versions of older Gob songs as well as new tracks from the forthcoming full-length Foot In Mouth Disease, which was released on Arista Records in April 2003. The album's mixed sales rode on the singles "Give Up The Grudge", "Oh! Ellin" and "later, Break". Failing to chart large commercial success, Gob was dropped from Arista Records after the album's release. It should be known that long-time fans of the band often dismiss this album, as the band left their earlier work even farther behind and created a sort of 'darker blink-182', seemingly to achieve higher commercial success, which may have hurt the band overall.

In 2004, longtime bassist Craig Wood departed the band to take over guitar duties for Canadian singer Avril Lavigne. The band have since recruited a bassist known only to fans as Tyson, as Gob's members are on a 'first-name basis' with their fans. (All albums credit the musicians simply by their first names, as well.)

Gob plans to release a new album, but little is known of the album nor who will release it, as they have no apparent connection to Arista as of late.
