Fort Ann (town), New York

Fort Ann is a town in Washington County, New York, United States. It is part of the Glens Falls, New York Metropolitan Statistical Area. The population was 6,417 at the 2000 census. The name is derived indirectly from Queen Anne.
The Town of Fort Ann contains a village, also called Fort Ann.

The fort named Fort Anne (in honor of Princess Anne, eldest daughter of King George II) was constructed in 1757 at the site where the 1777 Battle of Fort Anne occurred during the Saratoga Campaign. The town was organized as Westfield in 1784, but was renamed Fort Ann -- without the "e" -- in 1808.

Part of the western border is Lake George.
The town lies partially within the Adirondack Park.
According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 287.0 km² (110.8 mi²). 283.5 km² (109.5 mi²) of it is land and 3.4 km² (1.3 mi²) of it (1.20%) is water.

As of the census2 of 2000, there were 6,417 people, 1,386 households, and 1,042 families residing in the town. The population density was 22.6/km² (58.6/mi²). There were 1,957 housing units at an average density of 6.9/km² (17.9/mi²). The racial makeup of the town was 68.21% White, 24.08% Black or African American, 0.34% Native American, 0.26% Asian, 0.03% Pacific Islander, 6.36% from other races, and 0.72% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 12.48% of the population.
There were 1,386 households out of which 33.8% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 62.1% were married couples living together, 8.7% had a female householder with no husband present, and 24.8% were non-families. 19.3% of all households were made up of individuals and 8.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.66 and the average family size was 3.03.
In the town the population was spread out with 15.3% under the age of 18, 18.7% from 18 to 24, 39.3% from 25 to 44, 19.9% from 45 to 64, and 6.9% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 33 years. For every 100 females there were 251.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 292.8 males.
The median income for a household in the town was $41,832, and the median income for a family was $46,944. Males had a median income of $26,329 versus $23,917 for females. The per capita income for the town was $15,101. About 5.7% of families and 6.7% of the population were below the poverty line, including 4.7% of those under age 18 and 7.3% of those age 65 or over.

- Comstock -- A hamlet near the northeast town line; originally a shipping center founded by Peter Comstock, now site of two state prisons.
- Fort Ann -- The Village of Fort Ann, located in the southeast part of the town on Route 22.
- Hogtown -- A hamlet in the northwest part of the town.
- Pilot Knob -- A hamlet on the shore of Lake George.
- Shelving Rock -- A hamlet on the shore of Lake George.
- South Bay -- A hamlet in the north part of the town; stream running from mountains is headwaters of Lake Champlain.
- Tripoli -- A hamlet near the south town line.
- West Fort Ann -- A hamlet in the southwest part of the town, site of the Hadlock Pond dam which burst in July 2005, washing out roads and property.
