Forestdale is part of the London Borough of Croydon, to the east of Selsdon, and to the west of Addington. The main building development of the village, which commenced in the late 1960s and was completed in the mid 70s, took place on what was previously open ground containing a number of smallholdings. Forestdale is also linked to Croydon via Addington by Featherbed Lane which skirts the suburb on one side.
The distinctive feature of the village consists of cul-de-sacs running off four main roads, the cul-de-sacs being subdivided into several 'neighbourhoods'. All houses within a cul-de-sac are of the same style, but differ from the houses of all the other cul-de-sacs in style and materials, such as weatherboarding, brick colour and arrangement, and so uniformity of style is achieved within the same cul-de-sac but is divergent from all the others.
One more mark of distinction was the award-winning introduction in 1972, by the construction firm, Wates, of solar heating panels in four houses in one of the areas.
Forestdale has the advantages of being located in the greenery near a nature reserve with diverse walks, as well as being close to several golf courses. It is also connected with the Croydon Tramlink, and is linked through several frequent bus services, all of which contributes to the desirability of living in the area.
