First blood match

First blood is a type of professional wrestling match, the winner of which is the first to cause his or her opponent to bleed profusely.

One of the earliest First Blood matches in history took place on June 28, 1998 at King of the Ring 1998. The match was between Kane and the WWF Champion, Stone Cold Steve Austin.
Kane entered the ring, fully clothed from head to toe while Austin wore nothing but his usual trunks, boots, and pads. In the middle of the match, the Hell in a Cell cage, used earlier that night, began to lower. With the cage surrounding the ring both Mankind and The Undertaker soon interfered. The Undertaker, with ill-feelings towards his brother Kane, swung a steel chair aiming for his head. However, much to the dismay of the Undertaker, Kane then dodged his chair shot, causing him to hit Austin which then caused him to start bleeding. The referee was unconscious at the time, and Austin saw this as an opportunity. He then began to lay a heavy beating on Kane. Unfortunately for Austin, the referee regained consciousness in only a short while and called the match, thus giving the WWF Championship to the Challenger, Kane.
This would be one of the shortest title reigns in history, as Kane lost the championship to Austin the next night on RAW.

On July 25, 1999 at Fully Loaded 1999, Stone Cold Steve Austin defended the WWF Championship in his second First Blood match. This time, he faced off against the man who cost him a win in his first First Blood match, the Undertaker. The stakes in this match were much higher than the previous one; If Austin lost the match, he could never attempt to become the WWF Champion again, but if Austin won the match, Vince McMahon could never show his face on WWF television again.
After constant interference from both sides, Austin eventually won the match by taking a camera and smashing it against the head of the Undertaker, thus causing him to bleed. After Austin successfully defended the title, he then extended his hand out to McMahon. McMahon thinking that this was a sign of respect, took Austin's hand and shook it. Austin, staying true to his catch phrase "D.T.A.: Don't trust anyone.", then gave McMahon a stunner and taunted him as he left the arena. McMahon's departure was only temporary, as he returned back to WWF television a couple months later.
[edit] Other First Blood Matches
The next First Blood match occurred on an episode of SmackDown!. This time it would be between the newcomer, Chris Jericho and 'The World's Most Dangerous Man', Ken Shamrock. This would be Shamrock's last match, as he left the WWF shortly after.
The most recent First Blood match occurred between John Cena and Kurt Angle on an episode of RAW, hyping their feud. The ref was knocked out towards the end, allowing Angle's manager, Daivari, to interfere and cause Cena to bleed. Daivari dragged the ref over to show him that Cena was bleeding while Cena had Angle in the STFU.
The next First Blood match will occur at Survivor Series on November 26, 2006, between The Undertaker and Mr. Kennedy.

One of the first First Blood contests featured in WCW took place at Uncensored on March 14, 1999. The match pit WCW Champion "Hollywood" Hulk Hogan against Ric Flair in a steel cage with barbed wire surrounded the top of the cage. However, due to biased referee Charles Robinson, a heavily bleeding Flair won via pinfall. This marked his sixth reign as WCW World Heavyweight Champion.
