Fenner Hall

Fenner Hall is a residential college of the Australian National University in Braddon, Canberra. Fenner Hall, named in honour of Emeritus Professor Frank Fenner, houses almost 500 students and is located on Canberra's Northbourne Avenue. It is the only college not on the ANU's main campus in Acton.

[edit] Facilities
Fenner Hall consists of two towers, with some 470 rooms between them. Each tower contains nine residential floors, with roughly 26 students a floor. For a tariff of $136 a week, students get a 3x4 metre fully furnished room with all utilities included in the rent, access to cooking facilities, music and art rooms, 3-4 computer labs three common rooms, a TV room and a small library. The Warren Bar was installed in 2006. A small gym has been proposed for 2007.

Fenner Hall administration attempt to ensure a balance of students, male and female, local and international, junior years and senior years. As a result of the hall's policies in catering for international students, fifty five percent of the hall's residents are non-Australian.

The present Head of Hall is Peter Fyfe. The Dean of Residents, currently Liam Cosgrave, is responsible for pastoral, social, administrative and disciplinary matters. The dean is assisted by four Sub-Deans, each of whom is responsible for 4 or 5 floors (80 to 100 residents). Each floor has an appointed Senior Resident, responsible for organizing social events on the floor, monitoring students and informing the Dean of residents of any problems students are experiencing. The majority of floors also have an appointed Academic Assistant, these later years students assist undergraduates with university study.
Residents elect a Fenner resident's committee, responsible for organizing sporting, art and social events within the hall and with other university halls. The committee is also responsible for advocacy within hall and within the ANU. Currently the committee has 17 members.
[edit] Ongoing issues
Rent: Rent rises every year, usually by seven dollars. In 2006 the rent will increase by nine dollars from $127 to $136 a week. In previous years each rent rise was accompanied by a promise from the university that there would be no rent rises in the near future. Such promises are no longer made. Rent increases have made it harder for students to live in Canberra, especially as many students rely on government aid, in the form of Youth Allowance.
First Year Guarantee: As part of a marketing campaign, the Australian National University guaranteed all first year students who applied a place in a university hall. In order to achieve this, the University announced it would expel a number of later year students from the halls. Student opposition to this forced the University to guarantee current residents a continued place in the hall for 2005. However, the future of the policy remains in doubt.
