The Erie Metropolitan Transit Authority (EMTA) oversees the operation of at least 15 bus routes and other road related mass transportation in and around the city of Erie. It also runs shuttles around downtown Erie and the Millcreek Mall. The EMTA also runs a "track-less" trolley that can be booked for different events. The bus terminal is located at 127 East 14th St.

The first transit system in Erie started in 1897 as Erie City Passenger Railway Company. In 1887, it became the Erie Electric Motor Company. In 1906 it became the Buffalo & Lake Erie Traction Company. It became the Erie Railways Company in 1924. The last of the streetcars operated by the Erie Railways Co. were put out of service in 1935 and with that the Erie Railways Co. became the Erie Coach Co. The Erie Coach Co. ran transit buses until 1967, when it became the Erie Metropolitan Transit Authority.

Buses on routes 5, 6, 7, 8, & 9 all stop at the Intermodal Center on the bayfront across from the Blasco Memorial Library & Maritime Museum and near Dobbins Landing.

The EMTA also runs the city's LIFT program for senior citizens and people with disabilities. They also offer a "track-less" trolley that can be booked for transportation to or from events such as weddings, graduation parties, or reunions. A newer program for EMTA is their "Rack & Roll" program for bicyclists that allows them to take the bus to a destination while carrying their bike on a rack on the front of the bus for free (assuming that they have already paid the usual $1.10 fare). EMTA provides a water taxi service to Presque Isle for a $3 one-way fare or a $5 round-trip fare from Dobbins Landing. The EMTA also has recently started it a "Bay Liner Trolley" service, using new "track-less" trolleys, that takes the place of the Park & Ride service in Erie. Right now, there is no fare but that could change in the future.
[edit] Vehicle Types
Most of EMTA's buses were made by Orion Bus Industries. The Metro shuttles are all Orion II's. The rest of buses are an assortment of Orion V's, VI's, and VII's.
