Episcopal Diocese of Georgia

The Diocese of Georgia is one of 116 dioceses (as of March, 2006) that comprise the Episcopal Church in the United States of America (ECUSA).
The Episcopal Church in Georgia began as a small Diocese of three parishes in 1823. Seventeen years later there were six churches, and these parishes elected the first Bishop of Georgia, Stephen Elliott.
The Episcopal Diocese of Atlanta (northwestern Georgia) was set apart from the Diocese of Georgia in 1907. The Diocese of Georgia now covers the southeast 32,994 square miles of the State of Georgia, running from the Chattahoochee River west of Americus, Georgia to the Savannah River north of Augusta, Georgia. Savannah is the See City, and the Rt. Rev. Henry Irving Louttit, Jr. is the current Bishop of Georgia.
