Emily Quartermaine

Emily Bowen-Quartermaine is a fictional character on the soap opera General Hospital The character was originated by actress Amber Tamblyn and is currently played by actress Natalia Livingston.
Emily was adopted as a child by the wealthy Dr. Alan and Dr. Monica Quartermaine after her mother Paige Bowen died of breast cancer. Her biological father, Frank Bowen, had died several years before Paige became ill and Paige feared Emily would be orphaned. Paige's only living relative, her younger sister Corrie, was estranged from her family and Paige didn't know how to reach her and didn't want her to raise Emily.
When the Quartermaines adopted Emily, her legal surname became the hyphenated Bowen-Quartermaine. The Quartermaines discussed Emily's name and her desire to keep her birth name as part of her surname during an episode of the program. Bowen-Quartermaine remains her legal surname, though she is now only referred to as Emily Quartermaine.
Emily had a difficult time adjusting to the Quartermaine household and she and her new friend Lucky Spencer attempted to find her Aunt Corrie, but gave up without success. Eventually Emily grew to love her new family and they considered her one of the "good Quartermaines" whom everybody loved.
She is the only member of the family to have a close relationship with Jason Morgan, a mafia hitman and her adopted brother. Jason suffered brain damage in a car accident and no longer remembers his life as a Quartermaine, but he does consider Emily his sister because she was the only Quartermaine willing to accept him on his terms.
Emily had a number of adventures as a young teenager with Lucky Spencer, his half-brother Nikolas Cassadine, and her best friend Elizabeth Webber. She experimented with heroin, attempted to fly off the roof of the Quartermaine house, and had a bout of catatonia after she thought she witnessed her adoptive mother commit murder. When she was thirteen, she fell in puppy love with Nikolas Cassadine, the first boy she ever kissed. Nikolas viewed the younger Emily mainly as a good friend and surrogate little sister. She later had her heart broken when she caught Nikolas in bed, at her birthday party, with older woman Katherine Bell. Later in her teens, she dated Juan Santiago for a time, a relationship that ended when she was kidnapped at gunpoint by Zander Smith, the misunderstood bad boy who eventually became her lover and first husband. As a young adult, Emily was diagnosed with breast cancer, which is currently in remission, and was helped through it by Nikolas, who became her second husband right before he was sent to prison for killing his evil grandmother Helena Cassadine. Emily and Zander's marriage was ended when Emily fell in love with and committed adultery with Nikolas, who was also married. Later, she was raped by Nikolas's look-alike, Connor Bishop, while trying to get evidence that he was in cahoots with a still-alive Helena. Her inability to get past the rape and Nikolas's physical similarity to Connor led to the break-up of her second marriage. Emily is currently a medical student. She was involved with mob boss Sonny Corinthos, Jason's best friend. Jason wanted to break up the relationship between Emily and Sonny because of Sonny's dangerous lifestyle and his mental illness, which Jason has viewed at first hand. He feared Sonny would hurt Emily. Emily has helped Sonny deal with his recent diagnosis of bipolar disorder and persuaded him to enter therapy. However, Sonny decided to end the relationship with Emily. He decided that his lifestyle would ultimately destroy Emily. Emily protested, but was forced to accept Sonny's reasons for ending their affair. Emily is now growing closer again to her ex-husband Nikolas Cassadine. Emily is a Roman Catholic and is the godmother of Michael Corinthos III, who is her dead brother Alan "AJ" Quartermaine Jr.'s biological and Sonny's illegally adopted son.
