Dunman Secondary School

Dunman Secondary School (DSS) was founded in 1963 and is an autonomous co-educational secondary school in Singapore.

[edit] NPCC (National Police Cadets Corps)
Dunman's NPCC unit has come a long way since it was established in 1964. During this year's recruitment, NPCC recruited 22 cadets adding up to 103 cadets in total strength forming one of the school's largest CCA group.

This year our unit had the largest number of supernumerary cadets being trained by RSM NCC. Winning the Gold Award again for the third year running means a lot to the unit and they hope that they can continue to develop the unit to be the best NCC (Air) unit in Singapore.

Year 2005 was a blessing year for NCC land as the unit was awarded 'Silver' for the best unit competition. 6/15 cadets made it to the Second Sergeant rank after attending the Specialist course.
[edit] Red Cross
2005 marked an important year for Dunman's Red Cross. For the first time in Dunman Red Cross history, they won second-runner-up for the East District in the National Footdrill competition organised by Singapore Red Cross Youth annually.
[edit] Dunman Dove Scout Unit
2005 was a glorious year for [[[The Singapore Scout Association|Dunman Dove Scout Group]]. Once again the Dunman Dove Scouts not only participated in numerous activities and courses, it also attained several achievements.
[edit] Performing Arts
Guitar Ensemble The Guitar Ensemble provides opportunities for Dunmanites to develop their guitar skills, to perform and to develop friendship with schoolmates with similar interests.
Choir: Dunman Secondary Choir is one of the top school choirs in Singapore and a 4-time gold medallist in the biennial Singapore Youth Festival Choral Competition since 1997.
Concert Band: The Concert Band is a close knitted community of music lovers, edged on by their visionary band conductor Samantha Chong and its band teachers.
String Ensemble: Established since the 1990s, the group have had nurtured many budding violinists and cellists.
StageArts: 2005 has been eventful for the newly merged Drama and Dance Club, formerly know as the ELDDS and the Dance Club. With the merger, the strengths of the most visual of the performing arts are brought together, namely 1) StageArts International Dance 2) StageArts Malay Dance 3) StageArts Indian Dance 4) StageArts Drama 5) StageArts Change Agents

About Audio Visual Club... The AV Club provided PA services in numerous events within and out of school including OHP maintenance services in school.
About Computer club... Computer Club is one of the most popular CCAs in Dunman.
About the Interact Club... Interact Club is upholding its worthy motto ‘Charity Begins At Home’ by organizing a lot of fund raising activities to help the needy students in Dunman.
About Robotics Club... 2005 started off with a bang for Dunman Robotics Club. The Sec 4 and 3 members showed a high level of commitment and co-operation in the Singapore Robo GrandPrix 2005 held in Suntec City last February.
About Wushu & Lion Club... Wushu 2005 is a fruitful year for Josiah Lee of 3D. He did DSS proud again when he won Gold for the Inter-School Wushu Competition this year with his outstanding performance in Swordplay.
Lion Dance 2005 has been an exciting year for them. They also took part in the Pugilistic Extravaganza 2005, an event organized by Nanyang Junior College. About Visual Arts Club...
Visual Art/Pottery Club provides an avenue for students who are passionate in Art and Pottery to pursue and develop their talents and interests. All members look forward to the SYF Art Exhibition 2006 where their work will get a chance to be exhibited and celebrated.

About Green Club... 2005 has indeed been a very fruitful year for the Green Club. To begin with, Green Club sustained its Lotus Award Status, for its green efforts in 2004, in the annual School’s Green Audit Programme. Clinching a spot in the record books for its environmental involvement is a milestone to the Club. Dunman Secondary School clinched a spot in the record books by forming the ‘Longest Chain of Recycled Bottles’ at a length of 5.3 km (25,565 bottles). Our Guest-of-Honour Dr Yaacob Ibrahim officiated the event.

Netball In recent years, Dunman's Netball team has been a force to be reckoned with, beginning with the underdog championing of the 2003 East Zone Tournament ('C' Division). The girls then emerged champions of the 2004 East Zone ('B' Division) and 1st runner up in the Singapore School Sports Council National Netball Championship 2004 ('B' Division). In 2005, they were 2nd runners up in the East Zone Tournament ('B' Division).

In the National Bridge Building Competition 2005 organised by Ngee Ann Polytechnic, Dunman Secondary emerged 2nd.
learn@series award, coveted Science Genius Award for the National Learn@Quest Competition, Arts Educator Award in 2002,the coveted Publisher Award for Learn@Parks, in 2001, the Gold i-micro award and a Silver for the Learn@Museum and a Gold for Learn@Zoo in 2000. Once again in 2005, Dunman won the Technology Award in the Learn@Rivertrail Competition
1 team emerged 1st runner-up in the Division 1 Category. In 2004, the Robotics Club won the Most Innovative Design and Merit Award in the same competition. In the 2005 National Mobile Robots competition organised by ITE West, one team won a merit award.
At the 2005, Singapore Youth Festival Central Judging, Dunman Secondary clinched 6 awards. We would like to congratulate the Dunman Choir, Dunman Concert Band and Drama Club for clinching Gold awards. We are equally proud of our guitar ensemble for clinching a Silver Award at the 2005 Youth Festival Central Judging and our Modern Dance and String Ensemble for clinching a Bronze Award at their first attempt.
Dunman Secondary has clinched the sustained achievement award for uniformed groups for the 6th Year with 2 Gold Awards and 3 Silver Awards. The NCC Air and Dunman Venture Scouts have cinched a Gold Award while the National Police Cadet Corp, NCC Land and Dunman Dove Scouts have achieved a Silver Award.The Red Cross won the Youth Community Award-Gold, 2nd runner-up in the East District in the National Footdrill competition organised by Singapore Red Cross Youth annually.
At the inaugural National Schools Wushu Competition 2005, our student Josiah Lee won a Gold award for the Sword and a Bronze award for Northern Fist. In 2004, he won 3 Gold medals - the Northern Fist, Spear and Sword events during the National Wushu Competition.
Our student, Alexey Bobok, emerged third in the men's foil event during the National Junior Fencing Championship 2005. Ananurmelati bte Abdul Rahman represented Singapore in the 9th Asian Cities Gold Cup Taekwondo Championships with the Singapore Taekwondo Federation in 2005, and emerged 1st runner-up .
8 teams of Sec 3 pupils participated in the first Singapore Statistical Poster Competition organised by the National University of Singapore in conjunction with science.04. 2 teams were short-listed for the interview round and they went on to win the 2nd prize and a honourable mention for the secondary schools category.

In early 2006, Dunman Secondary School revamped the initially useless basement into something that's anything but, thanks to the suggestion by students. The doors leading to the basement were painted to create the illusion that it leads into a dark and long tunnel. The artist is unknown. Recently, a jamming room equipped with guitars and drums for the musically-inclined Dunmanites was added. The initially plain and ugly corridors outside the Design & Technology room were also given a fresh new look. The designs change with every few metres of wall area. Now, the walk along these rooms will no longer be a dull experience as the unique paintings on the walls will definitely turn heads. As you can see, Dunman is a place where innovative ideas and suggestions are always welcome.
In 2007, due to PRIME, the school will be expanded, improved and given a whole new look. The school hall will be made twice as big and hopefully, the new hall will have air-conditioning too. Funds will have to be raised for the cause. While on the subject of funds, Dunman Secondary is all about raising them. In 2005, after the Tsunami, an ex-student approached the school with an idea: to organise a concert in order to raise funds to aid the victims of the unfortunate disaster. Arrangements were made for celebrities and students to perform at the event. At first, word went round saying that the manager of the first Singapore Idol, Taufik Batisah, would arrange for the Idol to grace the event. Somehow, this didn't happen but the event still turned out to be fantastic. Other celebrities like Annabelle Francis and Aaron Aziz were spotted in the audience. Annabelle's husband, the rapper Sheikh Haikel was also there to open the concert with a few songs. All in all, due to tremendous support, the concert managed to raise S$25,000.
