A Nightmare on Elm Street 3: Dream Warriors was the third film in the A Nightmare on Elm Street series. The film was directed by Chuck Russell and starred Robert Englund, Patricia Arquette, Heather Langenkamp, John Saxon, Craig Wasson, Jennifer Rubin, Rodney Eastman, Laurence Fishburne, Ken Sagoes, Ira Heiden, Bradley Gregg, and Penelope Sudrow .
Zsa Zsa Gabor and Dick Cavett have cameo roles.

[edit] Plot summary
A young girl is making a makeshift model home. It's the home from her dreams, but she does not understand what it means. Kristen (Patricia Arquette) goes to sleep and awakens at a dark, dead house. She sees some children skipping rope and chanting an all too familiar rhyme. She sees a young girl riding a tricycle on the front porch. She approaches the girl, but the girl flees inside the house. As Kristen follows after the little girl, she begins to realize that she's in trouble. She finds the girl in a boiler room. As you hear someone walking above them, the little girl exclaims "Freddy's home".
It's a chilling beginning to a frightful tale. Kristen is one of a handful of kids who are the "last of the Elm Street children". When Kristen is placed in a psychiatric hospital, where all the other Elm Street children reside, for an "attempted suicide," the nurses try to sedate her, but Kristen will have none of it. After cutting one of them, Max (Laurence Fishburne), with a scalpel, she backs into a corner and begins chanting the rhyme she heard. When she is stuck on a verse, a new staff member finishes it for her. The staff member is none other than Nancy Thompson (Heather Langenkamp). It's been years since Nancy beat Freddy, but that hasn't stopped him from returning. Now, there are only a handful of Elm Street children left: Joey (Rodney Eastman), Taryn (Jennifer Rubin), Kincaid (Ken Sagoes), Phillip (Bradley Gregg), Jennifer (Penelope Sudrow) and Will (Ira Heiden).
Nancy and Kristen form a bond, while Kristen helps Nancy realize that Freddy is no longer dead when she pulls Nancy into her own dream. As Kristen is about to be eaten alive by Freddy, Nancy comes to her rescue. Freddy utters a gruesome "YOU!" As Nancy's fear come to reality, so to speak, she has to decide how to protect the children. Unfortunately, Freddy is still able to pick off Philip and Jennifer as Nancy is left helpless to save them.
Neil (Craig Wasson), the psychiatrist who works with the kids, begins to receive visits from a mysterious nun, Sister Mary Helena (Nan Martin). She informs Neil that Krueger was never properly buried and must be laid to rest in consecrated ground. Before anything can be done, Joey is kidnapped by Freddy in his dream, and lies in a coma until he can be brought out. As soon as the others awaken, Nancy and Neil are fired and the remaining kids are forced onto a course of nightly sedation, starting with Kirsten who reacts violently to Nancy's dismissal. As Neil and Nancy's father (John Saxon) go looking for Freddy's corpse, Nancy and the kids take one more group session to try and go in and free Joey and Kristen.
As soon as the kids fall asleep, Freddy separates them and kills Taryn and Will before the others can save them. However Kinchaid manages to fight his way through Freddy's barriers and reunite with Nancy and Kirsten.
As Nancy, Kristen, and Kincaid arrive to find Joey "tongue" tied to some stakes, dangling above a huge fiery pit, Freddy arrives with his now famous line "Looook, all the little piggies have come home!" As Nancy and the kids rush to save Joey, Freddy begins to drop him into the pit. Nancy saves Joey, while Kristen wrestles with Freddy. Nancy realizes that Freddy is stronger, to which he replies "the souls of children have made me strong." Kincaid tries to take Freddy, but is overpowered. Before Freddy can kill Kincaid, he realizes that his bones are being disturbed. Neil and Nancy's father are about to bury Freddy in a grave, inside an old junkyard. Freddy takes possession of his bones and fights off Neil and throws Nancy's father onto the tail fin of an old car, killing him.
Freddy returns to the children but is again foiled, this time by Joey. Nancy and the kids rejoice. Nancy's father visits her in the dream world as a spirit, explaining that he has "crossed over". He apologizes to her and hugs her. As Nancy and her father embrace, Nancy is stabbed by Freddy's glove. It wasn't her father after all; it was Freddy. Kristen tries to save Nancy, but it's too late and Freddy grabs Kristen instead. Just as he is about to finish her, Nancy takes Freddy's hand and stabs him with his own glove. At the same time, Neil has awakened and pushed Freddy's bones into the grave. He brandishes a bottle of holy water and begins to fling it upon the bones. In the dream world, the holy water is burning Freddy and bright light pours out from within his body. Neil takes a crucifix from his pocket and places it on the skull. A cross shape is burned into Freddy's head which delivers the final blow, killing Freddy.
It's too late... Nancy has died. At the funeral, as others are weeping in silence over the loss, Neil sees the nun that helped him. When he goes to thank her she is gone. He is left standing by a gravestone. On the stone there is a name, Sister Mary Helena. Just below that is another name, her birth name, Amanda Krueger, Freddy's mother.

Wes Craven intended for this film to end the Nightmare series, but its success belied this. Craven would not work on the series again until Wes Craven's New Nightmare.

Wes Craven's very first concept for this film was to have Freddy Krueger invade the "real" world. New Line Cinema rejected the idea at the time, but years later, Craven's concept was finally brought to the silver screen with New Nightmare. Also, Wes Craven did not want Nancy killed off. After rewriting it, Chuck Russell and Frank Darabont changed the role to have Nancy return to children rather than Neil.
The "dream suppressant" drug Hypnocil which Neil researches is also featured and written into this film, yet more prominently figures in Freddy Vs. Jason.
