Dominus Flevit Church
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Dominus Flevit Church is on the Mount of Olives in Jerusalem. The church's name is Latin for "The Lord wept". Here, according to a post-Scriptural Christian tradition, Jesus cried when he arrived in Jerusalem, allegedly predicting the destruction of the Temple, which was destroyed in the year 70 CE. The New Testament source is Luke 19, 37-42.
The church was built by the Franciscan order in 1954 to designs by A. Barluzzi in the shape of a tear, in order to represent Christ's tears. The church stands on the ruins of a small Byzantine church of the 7th century, of which some mosaics remain. Today the church is still held by the Franciscans.
