Disco Inferno is a musical play written by Justin Sepple and first performed by the Stage One Theatre Company in 1999. The Disco Inferno website[1] hasn't much information on the published show, but a synopsis of the show would be this:
Set in the funkadelic decade of the seventies, the hit comedy musical "Disco Inferno" seamlessly blends side-splitting humour with chart-topping hits of the era, sure to appeal to musical theatre lovers and seventies aficionados alike.
Jack wants to be a superstar, and spends very little time thinking of anything else. Sadly for Jack the closest he's come to stardom is clearing glasses in local talent-trap nightclub, Disco Inferno. When a contract promising fame and fortune is offered to Jack on a plate, by one devilish Lady Marmalade, Jack is only too keen to grab that plate with both hands. There's no such thing as a free lunch however, and Lady Marmalade certainly aint paying for this one.
It's all about soul, or so the show's tag-line goes, and Jack soon discovers that he must forfeit his in order to attain all his worldly dreams. Overcome with the prospect of fulfilling his ambition and Lady Marmalade's seductively persuasive manner, Jack quickly and bemusedly signs a contract, trading his soul for stardom, not fully understanding just what he is getting in return for his soul.
Jack's friends, geeky Tom and club DJ, Terry, have a hard job believing Jack's claim that he has traded his soul in return for stardom. Having seen him fail at several auditions, Jack's girlfriend, Jane, is excited for Jack and encourages him along.
Acting as his manager, Lady Marmalade quickly gets to work on making Jack a star, starting with getting club owner, ageing rocker Duke, to agree to allow Jack to perform at Disco Inferno, much to the annoyance of regular performer, Heathcliffe. Duke is suitably impressed with Jack's performance and, considering Heathcliffe's heated reaction to it, Duke offers Jack a regular slot at the club, in place of Heathcliffe.
Next Lady M takes Jack to get his image sorted with record publicist, Nick Diablo, who does his bit to ensure Jack is as famous and successful as he's always dreamed he would be; promising he will do photo shoots with Time magazine, do lunch with glamour girls and really be a superstar.
Jack has a wonderful time enjoying his new success, appearing at legendary venue The Roundhouse, then on Top of The Pops, all the while enjoying the limelight and the screaming fans.
As with most pacts with the Devil, these things rarely go as well as initially anticipated, and things do start going wrong for our man Jack. Jack and his now fiancée Jane, drift further and further apart until ultimately Jane leaves him. After an unfortunate incident involving his best friend, Tom, Jack's friends grow tired of his new superstar personality and he feels rock bottom. It is only following a run-in with jilted nightclub frontman, Heathcliffe, that Jack realises there's more to life than being a rich and famous superstar.
