Delia Gallagher

Delia Buckley Gallagher (Born 11 March 1970) is CNN’s Faith and Values Correspondent. Based in New York, Gallagher was a long time CNN Vatican Analyst, Vaticanologist, and religious journalist. Prior to joining CNN full time, she lived in Rome for 7 years, where she wrote a weekly column for Zenit News Agency and was a contributing editor for the magazine Inside the Vatican.

Delia Gallagher's parents, both Irish immigrants, met in America and wed in Ireland in 1969. Delia was born in San Francisco a year later and grew up in nearby San Jose, where her parents still reside.
Her mother Deirdre, a native of County Kerry, Ireland, studied and lived in Madrid where she met Bing Crosby at a dinner given by the American Embassy. He later offered her a job as his children’s live-in Spanish teacher. After much prodding, she came to the US in 1966 and moved to the Crosby's lavish Hillsborough estate just outside San Francisco. Delia’s father, Cathal, is from County Donegal, Ireland and came to the US to study law at the University of San Francisco.
Mr. Gallagher is retired from United Airlines, and is a founding member of and resident playwright for the Quo Vadis Theatre Company, a Catholic repertory group in San Jose. Mrs. Gallagher currently runs The Gallagher Learning Centre, a tutorial service in Saratoga, CA.
Delia is the oldest of five children and has four younger brothers: Charles, Michael, Peter, and Daniel.

Delia attended St. Joseph Cupertino School, Saint Lawrence Academy, the University of San Francisco (she was an editor of The Foghorn, the school newspaper), and Blackfriars, Oxford University, (founded by the Dominican Order), where she got her MPhil in Theology.
Delia speaks fluent Italian and conversational French.

While still in college, Delia started working part-time as a writer at KCBS San Francisco. She later joined the AM News Radio station full time after graduation. Her former colleagues described her as "extremely nice, focused, and hard working."
After graduate school, Delia joined the Oxford University Press (OUP) as a researcher and editor and was part of the team that produced the Dead Sea Scrolls CD-Rom. She moved to Rome in 1998 and started as a writer for Inside the Vatican. As a member of the Vatican Press Corp, she traveled with the late Pope John Paul II to Croatia, Poland, Slovakia, Spain, and within Italy. She also wrote a weekly column for the Zenit News Agency called “Rome Notes”, published every Thursday.
Delia lived in the tony Parioli area in Rome and rode her Vespa around town.

Since joining the network in September 2005 as Faith and Values Correspondent, a beat created especially for her, Delia has filed several packages including reports on Intelligent Design, Vatican Rules on Homosexuality and the Priesthood, an interview with the author Anne Rice, and Hassidic Jews in Brooklyn. She also appears regularly as an expert on religious matters, most recently, on Pope Benedict XVI’s first encyclical, Deus Caritas Est. She is a regular contributor on “On the Story” and a frequent guest on Lou Dobbs, CNN Newsroom, and Anderson Cooper 360.
