David Appel is a successful rightwing businessman in Israel. He is frequently accused of using his wealth to affect Israeli politics. Appel claims in return that he is persecuted by the Israeli establishment because of his views [citation needed]. In 2004 he was charged of bribing Israeli prime minister Ariel Sharon, in what became known as the Greek Island Affair. He was also charged with five other bribe offenses. In 2005, three of the charges were dropped, including the one involving Ariel Sharon.
