On re-reading the material below and having discussed it with another user, I notice that Mr. Taylor only claims UK copyright. I believe it is public domain in the U. S. and according am adding that tag and reinserting it in the article. Dpbsmith (talk) 00:42, 24 Dec 2004 (UTC)

This image is in the public domain in the United States. In most cases, this means that it was first published in the United States prior to January 1, 1923 (see the talk page for more cases). This is an illustration from page 1062, volume II, chapter XVII, of On Growth and Form by D'arcy Wentworth Thompson.

Cambridge University Press asserts it is under copyright; it is basically a "by permission" image. Correspondence as follows. Have removed it from page.

Dear Mr Smith,

D'Arcy Wentworth Thompson died in 1948 and his work is still in copyright under UK law, where the duration of copyright has since 1908 been determined as a period commencing at the death-date of the author. The lack of a copyright notice in the book itself would not affect this.

If the illustrations you are referring to are D'Arcy Wentworth Thompson's (i.e. not credited to a third party) then they are not public domain. That would apply both to the original 1917 book and to the 1942 second edition and to the 1952 printing.

a) There is no copyright notice. This is the entire text of what appears on the page where a copyright notice would normally appear:

b) A search at http://www.copyright.gov/records/cohm.html for the title "On Growth and Form" turns up a single record, a completely different work, a 1985 work: "On growth and form : fractal and non-fractal patterns in physics / edited by H. Eugene Stanley [i.e. Harry Eugene Stanley], Nicole Ostrowsky."

c) Certainly the 1917 material would be out of copyright. Unfortunately it's not clear which material was added in the second edition. I did not use figures 525 and 526 on p. 1064, which are more famous, because a note says "The coordinate system of Fig. 526 is somewhat different from that which I first drew and published;" so that is probably from the second edition. There is no similar note for the other illustrations.

d) This same illustration and some others appear at http://www-groups.dcs.st-and.ac.uk/~history/Miscellaneous/darcy.html without any indication of permission or copyright.
