Darts world rankings are a system which should determine a list of the best dart players in the world based on their performances in tournaments. However, after a group of former world champions and other high-profile players separated from the British Darts Organisation in 1993 - there are now two major governing bodies.
Each organisation has their own players, and each has their own ranking system. The ranking systems are used to arrange tournament seedings, which will mean that the number one player in the world should not face the number two player in the world until the final of a tournament (providing they reach that far).

[edit] BDO Invitational Rankings
The BDO Invitational Table relates only to registered playing members of the BDO, who comply with BDO and World Darts Federation (WDF) eligibility rules including terms and conditions of the 1997 Tomlin Order.
The BDO awards points depending on player's performances within each of its events. Twenty-one points are awarded to the champion of each its four Grand Slam Events - The Lakeside World Professional Championship, The International Darts League, The Bavaria World Darts Trophy and the Winmau World Masters. Lower points are awarded for each round of the tournament reached, and also lower points for the different category of events.

[edit] PDC World Rankings
The PDC operate their own World Ranking system which, unlike the BDO, gives more precedence to their World Championship by awarding 50 points to its champion. The other major televised event champions will receive 30 points and PDC Pro Tour Events (which have a prize fund of £20,000 but not televised) are worth 20 ranking points to their champions.
The top 32 players in the rankings are exempt for qualifying for the World Championship, top 28 for the World Matchplay, the top 24 for the World Grand Prix and the top 12 for the Las Vegas Desert Classic.
Colin Lloyd has been the world number one player in the PDC for most of 2005 and 2006, despite most of the major titles being shared between Phil Taylor and recently Raymond van Barneveld and John Part. Lloyd often accumulates ranking points in the less prestigious non-televised events, for which Taylor does not always compete. Barneveld is only ranked 33rd since switching from the BDO in January 2006 despite having won the UK Open and reaching the final of the Las Vegas Desert Classic.
The PDC has decided to switch to an Order of Merit ranking system after their 2007 World Championship. The top ranked player will be the one who wins the most money over the previous twelve months. This will give more precedence to the World Champion and the champions of the other televised events.
The top 32 players in the PDC rankings (at November 27, 2006) will automatically qualify for the 2007 World Championships and will be seeded for the event.
