Hello Dan, welcome to Wikipedia.

You might find these links helpful: How to edit a page, How to write a great article, Naming conventions, Manual of Style. You should read our policies at some point too.

If you have any questions, see the help pages, add a question to the village pump, or ask me on my talk page. I hope you enjoy editing here and being a Wikipedian!

  • You can introduce yourself on the new users page.
  • You can find lots more information, including open tasks and daily tips, at the community portal.

[edit] discussion threads

Good afternoon. You and Triskaideka are having an interesting discussion on Wikipedia talk:Deletion policy. Can I ask you to be less aggressive about interweaving your comments and replies? It may make flow well for both of you but it makes it almost impossible for anyone else to contribute to the conversation. I understand the desire but interweaving rebuttals breaks up your opponent's conversational flow and makes it very hard for the rest of us to match the comment to a signature. Was it really Triskaideka or are you replying to an anonymous comment? Sure, I can figure it out by retracing the history but that's really a pain in the neck. If you can either reply in complete sections below or structure the initial message in a format which supports interwoven responses, I think you'll get more than just the two of you participating in the discussion. (Your latest numbered post is a good example of a format which supports interweaving.) Thanks. Rossami 19:56, 28 Oct 2004 (UTC)

Hi Rossami, thanks loads for your comment. I applogise for my formatting mistakes - I'll keep my future replies formatted as you suggest. Thanks. Jack.

No apology necessary. I'm continuing to follow your conversation very closely. You have some very interesting suggestions. My initial reaction was skeptical and I'm glad I held my tongue. I'm currently wrestling with your suggestion about the "reader poll". The Amazon.com experience highlights both the strengths and the weaknesses of this approach. The answer you get is strongly influenced by the exact wording of your question as you ask for feedback. That makes your source data very difficult to interpret reliably.
For example, consider the question "was this article helpful to you?" On the face, it is neutral and directly targeted to the feedback you want. If the article is poorly written, you will get negative responses. Unfortunately, you will also get negative responses from readers who found the article as the result of a poorly structured search (finding an article on the United States when you're trying to write a report on the Americas would be an example). Every alternate wording that I have considered has had similar unintended results. The only solution I've come up with so far is to ask random users to take time to fill out a multi-question survey. That has it's own logistical problems. By the time you work those out, I keep getting functionally back to our status quo - wait until the article's proposed as a problem and then ask a lot of other people to look at it.
Anyway, it's a fascinating discussion. Keep up the good work. Rossami 18:13, 1 Nov 2004 (UTC)
Thanks! Yes, I agree that no single "reader poll" question would be perfect. My current opinion is that a reader-poll should be implemented on every page but the data it produces should automatically do anything. The statistics should just be there for everyone to look at. I know I for one would like to know what people think of the pages I've written / edited. I don't see what harm this could do (except a little bit of hassle for the MediaWiki developers). More information is good, right?! Jack 22:03, 2 Nov 2004 (UTC)

[edit] Image tag

Hi! Thanks for uploading the following image:

  • Image:Dv_sidekick.jpg

I notice it currently doesn't have an image copyright tag. Could you add one to let us know its copyright status?

You can use {{gfdl}} if you release your own work under the GNU Free Documentation License, {{PD-self}} if you wish to release your own work to the public domain, {{fairuse}} if you claim fair use, and so on. Click here for a list of the various tags.

If you don't know what any of this means, just let me know at my talk page where you got the image from, and I'll tag it for you. Thanks so much. Denni 04:23, 2004 Dec 13 (UTC)

P.S. You can help tag other images at Wikipedia:Untagged_Images. Thanks again.

[edit] Semantic Dementia

Many many thanks for your much needed recent contribution to the semantic dementia article! I'll try and help with its further expansion as soon as possible. Cheers, Stephen Allison 16:42, 13 October 2005 (UTC)

No problem. I'll try to add some more content to it too soon. Thanks, Dan aka jack 16:57, 13 October 2005 (UTC)

[edit] Panavision content dispute

Hi, just wondering if you could step into the breach and eyeball a potential edit war. See Talk:Panavision and also some of the recent edits (this past week mainly) to the digital and financial sections. I think that the user has little familiarity with WP policies and furthermore has a giant agenda he's pushing (perhaps at the expense of a degree of the truth). Anyway, if you have the time to take a look and give us your two pence, twould be greatly appreciated. Thanks! --Girolamo Savonarola 09:48, 20 November 2005 (UTC)

Hi Girolamo! Sure, I'll try to find some time to take a look! Thanks for the heads-up! Dan aka jack 12:06, 22 November 2005 (UTC)
Hi, I'm really sorry I haven't had a chance to take a look at the page yet. I'm off on holiday for five days now but I will try to take a look when I return! Many thanks, Dan aka jack 23:40, 26 November 2005 (UTC)

[edit] Neuroscience

Hello! I was working over on memory consolidation and I noticed you made some neuro contributions. Since you're a PhD student in the neuro field, I was wondering if you'd like to join us over in Wikipedia:Wikiproject Neuroscience? Semiconscioustalk 22:08, 24 January 2006 (UTC)

Thanks for the invite! I'll take a look. Dan aka jack 13:23, 25 January 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Fans needed...

Hi, I removed some of the "fans needed for interview" external links you added. I did this according to guidelines on when to link externally, because it's a temporary thing, and because it really looked suspicious that one user was adding links to the same page in multiple articles. Also, see things Wikipedia is not; it seems like you were using it for promotion. Is this for a project you're involved with? Good luck with it either way. --Christopherlin 16:44, 10 April 2006 (UTC)

Hi Christopherlin. Thanks for the message. Yes, I was a bit worried that those links would be seen as promotion of a sort. I'm not directly involved in the project, no - I was just trying to help out a friend who's interviewing people. I wouldn't normally use WP for "promotion" like this but I genuinely thought that WP readers would be interested in the oportunity of being interviewed about their favorite shows. Thanks, Jack Dan aka jack 16:52, 10 April 2006 (UTC)

[edit] WikiProject Filmmaking

Hey, I decided to finally get together and try to start a WikiProject for Filmmaking. Currently the temporary page is User:Girolamo Savonarola/wikiproject until I have a few more editors - enough to justify making it into a proper Project. Anyhow, just wanted to invite you to participate, and of course offer any comments you may have on the project. Thanks! Girolamo Savonarola 14:47, 29 June 2006 (UTC)

Hi Girolamo. Thanks loads for putting together this project - I will be sure to check it out. Please do also take a look at the "Movie Making Manual" wikibook: http://en.wikibooks.org/wiki/MMM Thanks, Dan aka jack 14:58, 21 July 2006 (UTC)
