Dan McCarney (born July 28, 1953, in Iowa City, Iowa) was the head football coach at Iowa State University from 1995-2006. He was the longest tenured head coach in the Big 12 Conference when he stepped down November 8, 2006[1]. He led the Cyclones to five bowl games, more than any other Iowa State coach in history. Coach McCarney molded the Cyclones into a respectable, mid-level Big 12 football team, despite having the smallest football budget in the Big 12.
Before taking over the head coaching position at Iowa State, McCarney played at the University of Iowa from 1972-1974 and was named team captain in 1974. McCarney was an assistant coach at Iowa from 1977-1989 and the defensive coordinator and defensive line coach at the University of Wisconsin under Barry Alvarez from 1990-1994.
Dan and his wife, Margy, have three children.
