Yes you are correct the WP:MOS advises against generally using ® symbol, but note there is a a caveat given of :unless they are important to the context (for instance to distinguish between generic and brand names for drugs). I think for articles on drugs this may often apply, but I would tend to only use on the first instance a brand name is mentioned. eg. "Funicillin was initially marketed as Happicil® in 1956.
