Crunchy Black (born Darnell Carlton) is a rapper and dancer from Memphis, Tennessee and was once a core member of Oscar winning hip hop collective Three 6 Mafia and is a pop culture icon.
He has since left the group. In an interview with Miss Info, DJ Paul and Juicy J said they haven’t talked to Carlton for several months and weren’t sure what he was up to. [citation needed]
He is known for his dancing, called "Gangsta Walking". He has performed the dance at the 2006 Oscars and on TV talk show appearances.
Some other songs of his include "Where da Cheese At" and "Pass Me." His unique style sets him apart from other gangsta rappers because he's blunt with his choice of words, and is not afraid to say his rhymes are elementary, boasting "I don't rap nigga, I rob". Crunchy's street credibility and raw storytelling talent has made him an instant legend in the eyes of both fans and the media.
Yo Gotti, a up and coming Memphis MC, has publicly beefed with Crunchy Black, calling him a "crackhead". Crunchy has yet to respond. Crunchy Black may have left Three 6 Mafia because he "could not wait anymore." [reffering to his solo album]
According to an article in Ozone Magazine, Crunchy Black said that half of the songs used for Three Six Mafia's last album Most Known Unknown were originally for his album and he was not getting paid for it. He stated that he had to pay for his own travel and hotel expenses, he was not allowed to go into business meetings with his lawyer, and that Three Six Mafia was behind shady business practices with his money.
As of now, Crunchy Black (along with former Three Six members, Gangsta Boo & Skinny Pimp) has, once again, joined Nick “Scarfo” Jackson (the creator of Prophet Entertainment that was once the home of Three Six) in his new mixtapes & albums with the New Prophet Camp [1].
Crunchy Black's debut solo album entitled "On My Own" was released on September 19, 2006. The album was previously slated to be titled "From Me to You 1 The Hard Way" and had been in the works for years, having been alluded to at least since 2003.
