Chattahoochee River National Recreation Area preserves a series of sites between Atlanta, Georgia and Lake Sidney Lanier along the Chattahoochee River. The 48-mile (77 km) stretch of the river affords public recreation opportunities and access to historic spots. The national recreation area was established on August 15, 1978. The park headquarters and visitor center are located at the Island Ford Unit of the park at 1978 Island Ford Parkway in Sandy Springs, Georgia.
The historic Marietta Paper Mill ruins along Sope Creek are preserved within the Sope Creek unit of the area. The Akers Mill ruins along Rottenwood Creek are found within the West Palisades unit.
[edit] Units
- Sope Creek - this unit is accessible through trails from the Sibley Forest neighborhood and a parking lot off of Papermill Road.
- Abbots Bridge
- Medlock Bridge
- Gold Branch
- Cochran Shoals - accessible from a Lower Roswell Road parking lot.
- Island Ford
- Vickery Creek
- East Palisades - This unit is accessible from Atlanta via Whitewater Creek Road and from Sandy Springs via Indian Trail. For Atlanta entrance, exit I-75 at Mt Paran Road, and go east, then left on Sentinel Post Road, and turn right on Whitewater Creek Road. For Sandy Springs entrance, exit I-285 at Northside Drive, and go south, then right on Indian Trail.
- West Palisades - This unit is accessible from both sides of I-75. The Paces Mill entrance is on the west side of I-75. From I-285, exit at US 41 (South Cobb Parkway), and go south. From I-75, exit at Cumberland Boulevard and go west, then left on US 41. The Akers Mill entrance is on the east side of I-75. From I-285, exit at Northside Drive/Powers Ferry Road. This exit is tricky. If you get on Powers Ferry Road, go west and stay straight on Akers Mill Road after you cross the river. If you get on Interstate North Parkway, go west, and turn left at Powers Ferry Road, and then turn right onto Akers Mill Road. Regardless of the route taken, once you get on Akers Mill Road headed west, turn left onto Akers Drive. From I-75, exit at Cumberland Boulevard and go east. At the intersection with Akers Mill Road, stay straight onto Akers Mill Road, and turn right at Akers Drive.
- Powers Island
- Johnson Ferry North - also accessible from trails in the Atlanta Country Club neighborhood.
