Charles Bell (surveyor)

Charles Bell (1813 -1882) was born in Scotland. He arrived at the Cape in 1830 and was appointed surveyor-general in 1848. He worked in a range of media, from woodcuts to oil painting over five decades. Bellville a northern suburb of Cape Town was named after him. He is famous for his oil painting depicting the arrival of Jan van Riebeeck at the Cape Colony in 1652.
