[edit] About Carl
Carl was the first of the King family to arrive in Emmerdale. When he arrived in Emmerdale he pretended to be footloose and fancy-free.
The truth was he was married to the long-suffering Colleen and had two children - Thomas and Anya. And it soon transpired that Carl was the master of deception.
Having joined Tate Haulage as a driver, Carl duped Scott Windsor into giving him information about a contract the business was vying for and won it for King & Sons himself. Infuriated Zoe Tate couldn’t believe what he’d done. And Zoe isn’t the only woman to be humiliated by Carl. Although Carl is a businessman like most of his family, he is not as ruthless.
Despite still being married, Carl was soon trying to woo Louise Appleton and, when she agreed to go out on a date with him, he thought he’d reeled her in. However, as they prepared to go on their night out, Colleen pulled up in the car and revealed the truth to Louise who slapped him round the face.
It’s Carl’s bad boy side that has long infuriated his father Tom, who considers him to be the black sheep of his family. So when Carl made an absolute show of himself at the family’s big party by being caught getting frisky with Chas Dingle, Tom was furious.
But Carl was surprised by how strongly he felt for brassy Chas. The pair were soon very close, and got closer still when Carl confessed his darkest secret to his shocked girlfriend.
Carl had been with postman Paul Marsden on the day he plunged to his death from the top of some scaffolding. Although it was an accident, Carl turned to his brothers Jimmy and Matthew for help - and, wanting to avoid scandal, they moved the body so Carl wouldn’t be implicated at all.
Chas was sympathetic, realising Carl was wracked with guilt and it looked like their relationship was about to move to the next level.
However, there was competition for Carl’s heart from psycho redhead Chloe Atkinson. Having enjoyed a one-night-stand with Carl just before he and Chas got together properly, Chloe was determined to win her man back and launched a campaign of poison pen letters against Chas.
Her evil behaviour paid off when Chas became convinced that he was betraying her. The couple split soon after. Before long, Chloe got Carl all to herself and Chas was heartbroken. While he was attracted to Chloe’s good looks, Carl wasn’t very interested in her personality.
So when he tried to cool the relationship, she hatched another plan. Pretending she was pregnant, Chloe got Carl to agree to stand by her and then tried desperately to conceive without him realising.
When Carl discovered Chloe wrote the letters to Chas, he kicked her out and the extent of her deceit was exposed. With Chloe gone, Carl kept a low profile for a while before coming to the realisation that he still had feelings for Chas.
But he was too late and Chas left to join the army, giving him reason to believe there could be something between them again in the future.
While Chas was gone, Carl formed a close friendship with her cousin Delilah – whom she hated! Although they bonded beautifully, Carl didn’t reciprocate Del’s strong romantic feelings for him – until he was blind drunk!
But waking up having slept with Del, she broke it off when she realised Carl still loved Chas. He went to the army barracks and tracked her down before gatecrashing a wedding to declare his love.
During this incident, Carl dropped Chas and caused her to hurt her leg – the injury meant she could no longer serve in the forces and had to come back to Emmerdale. After a while she fell back into Carl’s arms too. has bonded with Carl's children, and he is trying to help her mend her relationship with her own son, Aaron Livesy.
Now they were back together again, Carl wanted to make things permanent and asked Chas to marry him. She refused initially with the fear she could not trust him. However after tackling his vertigo, by completing a wing walk alongside cancer-sufferer Alice Wilson, he proved to Chas how much he loved her and she accepted.
Now engaged, the couple decided to move into Home Farm with Carl’s dad Tom and Chas became even more firmly ensconced in the King family by becoming Jimmy’s PA at the company.
But tensions were about to erupt as Matthew King had walked away from the family and the business to be with his one true love Sadie King – whom everyone despised. Setting up a rival business, Matthew used Carl as a pawn to leak some false information meaning Jimmy blew an important deal.
Sickened by his brother’s duplicity, Carl hit him and decided he no longer wanted him in his life. Now Carl’s working hard to live up to his father’s expectations in the business and trying to keep Chas happy at home.
Carl is the third son of Tom and Mary King. He had a special relationship with his younger brother Max since they can relate to each other through their lowliness in the King hierarchy. When he found out Max had died, he physically collapsed and cried for the remainder of the episode. His older brothers Jimmy and Matthew also care for him (although being businessmen they are reluctant to admit it) and sometimes become protective of him. His mother is dead, and he is rumoured to have one older sister who has never appeared on the show.
