Cape Cod Mall

The Cape Cod Mall is the largest shopping mall on Cape Cod, located on Route 132 in Hyannis, Massachusetts. Normal business hours are from 9:30 to 9:30, Monday through Saturday, with shortened hours on Sunday. Extended Holiday hours begin on the day after Thanksgiving.

The Cape Cod Mall was proposed in the late 1960s as a super-regional retail center for Barnstable County, due in part to rapid population growth. Before the mall was built, a Storyland theme park resided in its location. The mall was completed in the summer of 1970, with an initial capacity of approximately 50 stores (30-40 were occupied at the time), and was anchored by Sears, Filene's and Woolworth's, all of which formerly had locations in downtown Hyannis on Main Street. As of 2006, three of the original mall tenants remain: Sears, CVS, and the Mall Barbershop.

Behind the mall were two movie theaters, with two screens each. In 1977, Filene's was expanded to 2 levels, making it the first location on Cape Cod with escalators. The following year, an additional wing was added with 25 additional stores and a fourth anchor, Jordan Marsh. The mall remained basically the same for the next two decades, with a small food court added and an interior renovation completed in the mid 1980s (up to that point the interior of the mall was a dated stone/brick layout with orange and brown walls and ceilings - The original dated stone/brick floor can still be seen within the "Cape Cod Newstand Store" opposite Hollister and facing KB Toys). In 1996, Jordan Marsh became Macy's as part of the merger between the stores.

The most ambitious project to date was a renovation and expansion project starting in 1998. An additional wing was built (starting from the shuttered Woolworth's store and extending well beyond that). It would add 40 new stores, 3 small anchors: Best Buy, Marshall's (which formerly had a store behind the mall) and a two story Barnes and Noble. A 500 seat food court with a cathedral skylight and a carousel were also added. Other projects included doubling the size of Sears and constructing a 12 screen state of the art cinema with stadium seating (and the demolition of the dated theaters in back of the mall).

The mall currently encompasses approximately 850,000 square feet. It has the capacity for 115 stores, though this number can change depending on size requirements for individual stores. There are 8 vendors currently in the food court, 2 restaurants located at opposite ends of the mall, and 4 other eating establishments (counting ice cream stores) located throughout the building.
