Canadian Academy

Canadian Academy (CA) is a private K-12 international school located in Kobe, Japan on the man-made Rokko Island. The school is accredited by the US-based Western Association of Schools and Colleges (WASC) and is certified to award both International Baccalaureate and US high school diplomas. The curriculum is in English.
[edit] High School Courses
English: Four English credits are required to graduate from Canadian Academy. Students must take Introduction to Literature in 9th grade and World Literature in 10th grade. From 11th grade to 12th grade, students have the choice of taking either IB English A1 HL, IB English A1 SL, or a sequence of four semester courses focusing on literature and literary skills.
Mathematics: The Mathematics courses taken by students are based on their ability in math classes. In 9th grade, students either take Algebra I or Geometry. Which class they take depends on what class they took in their 8th grade year. If a student has completed Algebra I in 8th grade, the student will proceed into Geometry. However, if a student took Pre-Algebra in 8th grade, the student will move on to Algebra I. In 10th grade, students will move up one class. Geometry students will take Algebra II or Algebra II/Trig. Algebra I students will move onto Geometry. In 11th and 12th grade, students will either take IB Mathematics SL or IB Mathematics HL. However, IB Math Studies and AP Calculus are also offered, and those classes can be taken instead.
Modern Languages: French, Japanese and Spanish are taught as Modern Languages at Canadian Academy. French and Spanish are taught in five levels, I, II, III, IB year 1 and IB year 2. Japanese, however, due to greater demand is taught at many different levels according to the students ability. IB courses for Japanese include IB Japanese A2 HL, IB Japanese A2 SL, and IB Japanese Abinitio.
Science: Three Science credits are required for graduation, however many students usually graduate with many more. In 9th and 10th grade, students take three science class (Biology, Chemistry and Physics) each lasting two-thirds of the year. This will allow students to see what science(s) they would like to persue in their junior and senior year. For 11th and 12th grade, IB Biology HL/SL, IB Chemistry HL/SL and IB Physics SL are offered.
Social Studies: Three Social Studies credits are requited, and usually two credits are completed by the end of 10th grade. In 9th grade, students are required to take Asian History, and in 10th grade, students are required to take Introduction to History and Economics. This 10th grade class will prepare students for IB History and IB Economics, which are both 2-year courses. Japanese History and U.S. History are also available courses, however, they are not IB courses.
