Caferati
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Caferati is a forum for writers in English. It operates online through a message board on Ryze, and in the real world, through "read-meets" where its members share works in progress and help each other improve through peer group review.
Set up in July 2004 in Bombay/Mumbai as the Bombay Writers' Cafe, its membership rapidly expanded beyond the city, so its moderators changed the name to Caferati, a play on the words "cafe" and "literati." Though meant to be a purely online forum, members expressed a desire to meet in person, which gave rise to sessions that the group refers to as "read-meets." These now take place at frequent intervals in thirteen cities in India and another two in Dubai, UAE, and Lahore, Pakistan.
While Caferati's origins are Indian, and most of its members either reside in the country or have some connection with it, membership is open to adults anywhere in the world with an interest in writing in English.
Caferati has collaborated with the Kala Ghoda Arts Festival to run contests and a blog for its 2006 festival. It has been a guest of the Festival, hosting evenings dedicated to showcasing new writing at the 2005 and 2006 festivals. It publishes free email newsletters focussed on writing opportunities and contests.
