[edit] History
Formed in 1872 (as Bury United), Bury are the 4th oldest non-league club in England and one of the founder members of the Suffolk FA in 1885. The club has also spent periods being named Bury St Edmunds FC and Bury North End FC.
The club's early years were spent playing in the Norfolk & Suffolk League followed by the Essex and Suffolk Border League. In 1935 Bury became founder members of the Eastern Counties League, marking their ascent to senior football. They remained in this division until 1964, when the club won the Eastern Counties League, it's sole success in this division. In addition to winning League Cup and the Suffolk Premier Cup, Bury were promoted to the Metropolitan League. They won the Metropolitan League twice, in 1967-68 and 1968-69, and reached the 1st round proper of the FA Cup for the only time in '68, losing to Third Division leaders AFC Bournemouth after a replay. After finishing as league runners up in 1970-71, Bury moved into the Southern League for the start of 1971-72. The club struggled at this level, and returned to the Eastern Counties League for the 1976-77 season.
A new era started in 1978, when the club moved to its current ground, Ram Meadow. The club continued in the Eastern Counties League until the 1986-87 season, when they were able to move back up to the Southern League, competing in the Southern Division. After a mixed series of seasons the club restructured in 1995 and accepted a transfer to the Midland Division for the 1995-96 season. This division proved to be too arduous for Bury, and they were relegated after their first season to the Jewson League Premier Division. A second place finish in 2005-06 allowed the club to apply for promotion to the reinstated Isthmian League First Division North. This promotion was approved, and Bury will start 2006-07 in a new league.
