Briarcliff Manor, New York

Briarcliff Manor is a village in Westchester County, New York, United States. It is shared between the towns of Mount Pleasant and Ossining, and lies entirely within the ZIP code of 10510. As of the 2000 census, the village population was 7,696, over 91% of whom lived in the Town of Ossining. The town is known for its award-winning school district (ranked 94th nationally as a public school system) and is also home to a campus of Pace University. It was also the home of the former King's College the former site of the exclusive Briarcliff Lodge (early 1900s). Briarcliff is the site of the Trump National Golf Course (formerly Briar Hall Country Club),owned by real-estate mogul Donald Trump. The village motto is a Village between Two Rivers. In 2005, the Middle School was named a Blue Ribbon School.

Briarcliff Manor is located at 41°8′39″N, 73°50′29″W (41.144033, -73.841340)^GR1.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the village has a total area of 17.3 km² (6.7 mi²). 15.4 km² (5.9 mi²) of it is land and 1.9 km² (0.8 mi²) of it (11.24%) is water.

As of the census^GR2 of 2000, there were 7,696 people, 2,435 households, and 1,996 families residing in the village. The population density was 501.1/km² (1,298.9/mi²). There were 2,501 housing units at an average density of 162.8/km² (422.1/mi²). The racial makeup of the village was 90.74% White, 1.73% African American, 0.05% Native American, 5.44% Asian, 0.04% Pacific Islander, 0.95% from other races, and 1.05% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 3.13% of the population. Though it has few minorities, Briarcliff has a decent-sized Jewish population, and a synagogue called Congregational Sons of Israel (CSI). Other houses of worship include Scarborough Presbyterian, All Saints Episcopal, St. Theresa's, Briarcliff Congregational, Holy Innocents Anglican, and Faith Lutheran Brethren Church.

There were 2,435 households out of which 44.1% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 74.5% were married couples living together, 6.0% had a female householder with no husband present, and 18.0% were non-families. 15.8% of all households were made up of individuals and 9.0% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.84 and the average family size was 3.16.

In the village the population was spread out with 26.8% under the age of 18, 9.0% from 18 to 24, 24.7% from 25 to 44, 24.8% from 45 to 64, and 14.7% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 40 years. For every 100 females there were 87.3 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 81.3 males.

The median income for a household in the village was $133,272, and the median income for a family was $157,607. Males had a median income of $100,000 versus $61,208 for females. The per capita income for the village was $58,646. About 0.8% of families and 2.5% of the population were below the poverty line, including 1.1% of those under age 18 and 5.0% of those age 65 or over. Briarcliff, like nearby Chappaqua or Scarsdale, is a very wealthy village.

[edit] Neighborhoods

The Tree Streets are a network of streets named after trees, such as Satinwood, Larch, & Oak. They are popular trick or treating sites for the local youth. Some of the oldest houses in the town lie on these streets, with the exception of Satinwood, the newest of the tree streets, which has new houses with the exception of a refined farm house.
North State Road is a street with apartment buildings, businesses, and small houses. This area incorporates streets such as Schrade Road, which also has apartment buildings and small houses. The Wyndcrest condominium development is also in this area.
Burns Place and Fuller Rd. This is an area consisting of several streets. It also has a small baseball park. It is not uncommon to see children riding bikes, scooters, etc. to friend's houses in this area.
Downtown, commonly referred to as Town, is the closest thing to a "main street" in Briarcliff Manor. Briarcliff's "main street" is Pleasantville Road. It is home to the Briarcliff Manor Fire Department as well as a number of commercial establishments. Farther along the road are the Briarcliff High School and Briarcliff Middle School. The elementary school, Todd School, is located on Ingham Road, which intersects with Pleasantville Road.
Long Hill Road stretches a long distance across Briarcliff. Many nice houses can be found on this road, as well as on the roads that branch off of it, such as Law Road, Ridgecrest Road, Holly Place, Cottonwood Lane, Hirst Road, and Cedar Drive East and West. Ridgecrest Road roads boasts incredible river views.
Rosecliff is a development of similar houses in the south-west corner of Briarcliff Manor, overlooking the Hudson River.
Meadowbrook Farm is an area that falls under the postal and school systems of Briarcliff but is not governed under the village, rather by the Town of Mount Pleasant. Carleton Avenue, Pea Pond Lane, and Washburn Road are some streets in this area.

[edit] Other Significant Areas

Scarborough - Is a hamlet almost entirely in Briarcliff Manor along the Hudson River that has a post office and train station on the Metro North Hudson Line. This is not incorporated in Briarcliff's School District. During the early 20th century families such as the Vanderbilts, Astors, and Rockefellers entertained guests on their "country" estates with sweeping River views in the Scarborough area.

Chilmark - Chilmark is a residential community along with a shopping center that is on the northern end of Briarcliff. The name of the area comes from the castle-like Chilmark Mansion. Like Scarborough, Chilmark is not incorporated in Briarcliff's School District. Children from this neighborhood fall under the Ossining School District's jurisdiction.
Both Chilmark and Scarborough enjoy the privilege of Briarcliff Manor Recreation.
