[edit] Serial Experiments Lain

I ain't reading the whole artichle, but she did the starting theme to english version of Serial Experiments Lain. I don't know, I just think that should be mentioned somewhere.

You got the wrong "boa". Starting theme for Serial Experiments Lain was done by Bôa. Monni 15:23, 4 July 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Outgrow

I don't think we should use that pic as her main one, since it more represents the album, not her

Agree. Does anyone have an alternative picture? OutsiderZ99 08:55, 17 November 2006 (UTC)

[edit] My Name

Shouldn't we have a picture of the album "My Name" in the My Name section? -- LaotianBoy1991

[edit] BoA's Age

"At the age of 18, she has made strides in music and acting with chartbreaking albums . . ."

Uh . . . according to the birthdate given in the Wikipedia article, we don't even know what she'll have done at 18 yet. Has John Titor visited Wikipedia to tell us all? 24.4.127.164 10:57, 28 Aug 2004 (UTC).

From a very early age, BoA has already had surgery. If you look at her past photos and slowly look at the more recent ones, the changes to her face can be seen. Many JPOP and KPOP singers also do this, to improve their image. I believe that, they are influencing the public in a way that is not appropriate.

BoA's facial difference can be easily accounted for by the fact that she's lost a LOT of weight since she started on the music scene. There's no proof she's had any kind of surgery. Tenshi 17:54, 22 September 2005 (UTC)

Um, the article says there is an article or something about the age difference but nothing came up on Wikipedia when I googled it. Anyone want to linkify that/write the applicable article? 68.239.174.81 02:25, 5 November 2005 (UTC)

[edit] Hanja

The hanja for BoA's name is not her actual name. It was created so that Chinese-speaking countries have something to call her. BoA herself has said her name is a pure Korean name, meaning "to look over; look" etc.

Inherently most of the syllables in Korean language can find their respective Hanja, so I think even if her name is given in a totally Korean perspective at birth, the name interpreted in Hanja is worth staying there.

I can't understand what the second paragraph means. It's customary for Koreans with pure-hangul names to write their given names in Hangul and surname in Hanja, when other people would write both their surname and given name in Hanja. Consequently, I've rewritten her given name in Hangul. The Chinese characters (which are in fact not her given name) can be included in the Chinese edition of Wikipedia. --KJ 04:56, 2 February 2006 (UTC)
In the article, 權寶雅 was initially added at 23:05, 30 August 2004 by Spencer195. It was subsequently changed to 權寶兒 (Chinese name) at 08:42, 26 November 2005 by an anonymous user. Cannot verify either one to be BoA's real (legal) name. 權보아 seems to be appropriate enough.--Endroit 10:08, 2 February 2006 (UTC)
The names are discussed in some detail on zh:寶兒#BoA的本名, but I don't know Chinese, so I'm not sure what it says. From what I've seen, and what I can gather from a Babelfish translation of that text, 보아 is a native name with no hanja, 寶雅 is a hanja name that was retrofitted to it at some point in her career, and 寶兒 (Bǎo-er) is the name for BoA used in Chinese. I think 權보아 is appropriate as well, but since BoA is entering the Chinese market, it might not hurt to mention the other names as a footnote (or if someone could translate that section and add all or part of it to the English article, that might help clarify things) - Calcwatch 10:38, 2 February 2006 (UTC)

[edit] External links

I am showing some Alexa rankings for the external links as of now:

Although external links aren't classified using web notability, it is clear many links point to sites that aren't important enough for the article. In other words, it is possible that the webmasters or site users added them here in order to increase the amount of traffic to them. Since Wikipedia is not a repository of links, I suggest deleting all links to fan sites that are not official, nevertheless language, and keeping only official references and those sites which had been used while creating the article. Thus, from all those listed sites, only the one I marked with (*) should stay, unless it can be verified that another site was used while creating this article. If nobody objects, I will clean the section in a week. -- ReyBrujo 05:54, 9 January 2006 (UTC)

Well, I decided to do it myself. Please, don't add new external links without discussing first, remember that Wikipedia is not aa link repository. -- ReyBrujo 21:24, 23 January 2006 (UTC)

Thanks! -- Visviva 03:58, 24 January 2006 (UTC)

Why did BoAJjang add their link to the external links on the main page. Didnt we all agree not to post fansite links there? Wikipedia strictly prohibits advertising. Please BoAJjang, do not post your link on the external links list on the main page of BoA. Thanks.

[edit] Discography

The discography section is starting to look very aesthetically displeasing, I think the sales totals should not be included in the tables, but presented on their own in - for instance - a list.
-- chsf, 12:14, 2006/01/26 (UTC)

[edit] BoA NOT highest selling foreigner and first to have 2 albums with 1 million in sales in Japan

Mariah Carey is. Here is proof: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mariah_Carey_albums_discography

I don't know why Korean articles always state BoA as having outsold Mariah in the Japan market! It's totally untrue!

"It became BoA's highest selling Japanese album, selling over 1,250,000 copies domestically (making her the highest and fastest selling foreigner in Japanese history) and 1,300,000 copies worldwide."

BoA's Japan album sales: 4,196,000 // Mariah Carey's Japan album sales: 13,098,000

"Best of Soul made BoA the first non-Japanese singer to have two albums sell over a million copies domestically: Valenti and Best of Soul."

BoA sold 1.25 million copies of Valenti (2004) and 1.076 million copies of Best of Soul (2005).

Mariah Carey sold 1.6 million copies of Music Box (1993), 2.1 million copies of Merry Christmas (1994), 2.2 million copies of Daydream (1995), 1.1 million copies of Butterfly (1997), and 3.5 million copies of #1's (1998). The preceding unsigned comment was added by 65.110.24.179 (talk • contribs) .

Post the links to trusted external sites with information about the sales. You cannot use Wikipedia articles as sources. I checked the sources for that Wikilink, but found nothing stating sales in Japan. -- ReyBrujo 22:25, 26 January 2006 (UTC)
well, this article does not site ANY sources either -- chsf, 23:28, 2006/01/26 (UTC)

I agree...the BoA article has no sources as well!

This article was posted in January 2004 (scroll to bottom): http://www.mariah-charts.com/chartdata/Tokio.htm It was originally posted at www.mariahconnection.com, which is a reliable source. ORICON is listed as a source for this article and basically they do all the Japan charts and stuff.

Here is an excerpt:

1. Sold: 2.809 Million, #1`s Mariah Carey (98)

3. Sold: 2.203 Million, DAYDREAM Mariah Carey (95)

4. Sold: 2.083 Million, MERRY CHIRISTMAS Mariah Carey (94)

5. Sold: 1.589 Million, MUSIC BOX Mariah Carey (93) [peaked at #2]

15. Sold: 1.025 Million BUTTERFLY Mariah Carey (97)

Who is the biggest selling international artist in Japan:

1. Mariah Carey (11.4 million)

2. The Beatles (8.4 million)

NB. This is based on figures from 1968 to 2002, as published by Oricon.

Source: Oricon Year Book / Mangaka

Yes, this is based on info up to 2002, before BoA released Valenti and Best of Soul, but based on the UNCITED sources in the BoA article, they're not even close to the above numbers. Keep in mind that Mariah has sold more albums since then as well, especially since her newest album was just released in 2005. The preceding unsigned comment was added by 65.110.24.179 (talk • contribs) .

Hmmmm, the Oricon is a reliable source, the Tokyo Hot 100 on the other hand...is not. And of course a site that cites a source (whether reliable or not) only provides you with second-hand information. The problem with these artist articles is that there are too many fanatics running amok, presenting a very biased version of their idols' careers. -- chsf, 10:56 2006/01/27 (UTC)

I'm sorry, I presented that information incorrectly.. this is my source: http://www.oricon.co.jp/news/ranking/4676/ . But its that BoA is the first foreign Asian artist to have two albums exceed a million in sales. But I still think the statment fastest selling may still hold true. I'll change the info on the main page ^_^; Yajimari21 23:59, 27 January 2006 (UTC)

BoA is a foreign JPOP artist who "is actually active" in Japanese market. Mariah Carey and the Beatles never did, they just licensed their albums.

That doesn't mean Mariah Carey and the Beatles are foreign artists. mirageinred 15:00, 14 October 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Bold

Why is it that whenever BoA is mentioned in the article, BoA's name is written in really bold BoA-like BoA-letters? Chsf 17:26, 30 January 2006 (UTC)

Fixed. --KJ

[edit] Everlasting

"Everlasting" debuted at #4, not #3 in the Oricon singles chart. #1 was Tackey & Tsubasa "Venus", #2 Remioromen, and #3 - and here lies the problem I guess: Kumi Koda featuring Mr.Blistah "Candy". So kindly take your idol wars elsewhere and stick to the facts. -- chsf, 11:13 2006/02/06 (UTC)

I think the person is confused since Everlasting was #3 on the daily charts for a few days... but we are basing info on the weekly statistics, so #4 is the appropriate position. Yajimari21 16:08, 7 February 2006 (UTC)

He-he, so I can stick my harsh words up somewhere the sun never shines then. Good to see someone who's got things under control ^_~ chsf, 18:30, 7 February 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Pornography?

Did this woman ever appear in a Japanese pornographic film? —The preceding unsigned comment was added by 75.2.38.48 (talkcontribs) .

  • No, but I guess you are thinking of this: [1] --PTSE 00:23, 19 April 2006 (UTC) (Restored from history. -- Calcwatch 03:37, 19 April 2006 (UTC))
    • Heh...they got the title of the tape wrong. It's titled "BoAコス", likely short for "BoAコスプレイ". The tape clearly says it's not BoA, but someone who looks like her. The tape even has the name of the look-alike right on the cover. (^_^) --日本穣 Nihonjoe 03:56, 19 April 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Korean Japanese?

Does BoA actually live in Japan? If not, two of those categories need to go. -- Visviva 10:37, 30 April 2006 (UTC)

  • She lives in Japan for half of the year, but no, she is not a permanent resident. Yajimari21 21:03, 18 May 2006 (UTC)

I think she qualifies for living in Japan It's pretty difficult to get perm res.--Hontogaichiban 22:38, 18 May 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Searching/Redirect BoA

I really think BoA should be the redirected article when you search BoA on wiki. Searching for Google images, there's clearly more pictures about the pop star than more about the snake. When you search on Google search, this article is in the top 5 compared to the snake not being on the first page--for an Asian artist, this is pretty big to be featured that high on a Western search engine. Where do we go to change this? --Nissi Kim 05:43, 22 August 2006 (UTC)

It just teaches people to write her stage name properly. I wouldn't object to changing the main "boa" page to disambiguation page, but redirecting directly to "BoA" article would cause major flame war. Monni 10:20, 22 August 2006 (UTC)

[edit] "Critisisms"

To whoever put that on the page: WHERE did you hear about these rumors? I have followed BoA news closely for the past two years and have never heard about anything of these so called "critisisms". Second, spell CRITICISM right. Badkarma 20:12, 23 August 2006 (UTC)

I want to agree with Badkarma. I have been a close follower and big fan of BoA since her debut and have never been aware of these rumors as well. If they truly were rumors, they sure were not big enough to make the media. I think the criticisms part should be deleted as it does not reflect the truth.

Actually, there was a rumor that BoA smokes. I've seen Korean articles about her smoking and all that, but I don't know about other rumors, but that doesn't really matter because the edit itself was very poor. mirageinred 19:27, 10 September 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Main Picture

  • Why doesnt she have a main picture? PrincessOfHearts 21:28, 23 August 2006 (UTC)

I keep trying to upload a main picture, but I always get something saying I'm causing copyright infringement. I just uploaded a low-quality of her newest single, but now it looks like crap because it's... low quality. XD If anyone else would like to upload a better image, be my guest. Badkarma 20:45, 24 August 2006 (UTC)

  • oh ok.

Hello! Badkarma, I have some BoA's picture that might be suitable to be a main pic. Please add my msn: evo666hk@hotmail.com I will send you those pictures and lets discuss together. of course as a BoA's fans, I wish BoA's page can be more perfectly. Please add me as soon as you can! ^^~

[edit] New Stuff Added

I went on a searching rampage and tried to find as many magazine titles as possible that BoA has been in. You can now view this list on the page. I've also added a new section of BoA trivia. Please feel free to add to it with sources. Badkarma 00:04, 28 August 2006 (UTC)

Thank you for your effort, but a long list is not necessary, as the article is already too long and please refrain from adding anymore trivias. Trivias should not be there in first place, but I guess one or two is okay. mirageinred 03:24, 1 October 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Development in BoA's Acting Career

According to "StarNews Korea" (article dated 13 Sep 2006), BoA will start her acting career next year in Korea. According to the article, BoA will not be holding her annual "Arena Tour" in April rather, will start her acting career in Korea. It does not state what drama/movie she will feature in however, the article is clear that she will start acting in Korea next year. I think someone should add this. This is the link to the website but it's entirely in Korean. Link here. dandan xD 9:37 pm 14 September 2006 (AEST)

[edit] Few things needed to improve the article...

The most important thing is citations. I added tag to pin-point where it needs citations. Citations must come from reliable sources. This means no forums, blogs, livejournals, or any sites requiring registration. Sources are also needed regarding number of records sold.

This article is also becoming too long. I removed tried to remove excessive information, especially trivias. They're interesting, yes, but they are unencyclopedic and information regarding her height and blood type is way to unencyclopedic. mirageinred 03:36, 1 October 2006 (UTC)

[edit] External Links, again

I thought we all agreed to not add un-official links. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Talk:BoA#External_links

Why do they keep being added back?Winampman 12:44, 1 November 2006 (UTC)

I don't know. Seems like BoAJjang is keep adding links, so other sites are doing the same. =/

Thanks for cleaning up, Iloveayu =)Winampman

You're welcome, but they just keep coming up again and again. Anonymous users also add information without proper sources. We are going to have to keep constant watch over this. mirageinred 19:53, 7 November 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Please disambiguate

Could someone who knows more about this subject than I do please disambiguate the link to Ting (that's a dab page) in the "Other Appearances" section of this article? Thanks. --Tkynerd 13:08, 4 November 2006 (UTC)

The "Ting" in question is a service provided through SK Telecom, quite big on the Korean market but not covered here yet at all (as far as I can tell). Have dabbed the link to point to Ting (phone service) & added it to the dab page. -- Visviva 15:00, 4 November 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Major transformation

there were simply too many subsections in her biography, so i reassembled it. Next time please do not put the headings in italics or in links. this goes against the manual of style policy. the wording of the biography was also very... POV, so i tried to fix it as much as possible. mirageinred 04:26, 18 November 2006 (UTC)
