The Battle of P3Y-229 was a fictional battle that took place in the Stargate SG-1 episode Camelot from season 9. In the Stargate universe this was the first incursion of the Ori forces into the Milky Way Galaxy.

[edit] Prelude

Upon learning that the Ori had constructed a new supergate, which could be used to transport entire ships from their galaxy, Stargate Command dispatched the Daedalus class battlecruiser "Odyssey" to the former location of P3Y-229, the planet itself was turned into a micro black hole to power the Supergate. When they arrived they joined a large contingent of the Free Jaffa Nation's Ha'tak ships, as well as several of the Tok'ra's Ha'tak-class ships, which had been trying to destroy the supergate to no avail. An O'Neill class battleship, commanded by Kvasir, was sent by the Asgard to assist in the battle. The Korolev, another Daedalus class ship, later arrived, with Daniel Jackson and Cameron Mitchell on board. Also arriving later in the battle was the Lucian Alliance and Teal'c with several Ha'tak-class ships.

A plan was formulated where Samantha Carter would change the dialing crystal on the Supergate so that the Milky Way forces could dial out, thus preventing the Ori forces from dialing in. But just after she changed the crystal, while waiting for it to initialize, the gate began activating and the plan was aborted as the Supergate opened. Interference from the gate blocked any attempt to get a lock on her with the Asgard transporter, thus leaving her stranded in space for the time being.

[edit] Incursion

The Supergate opened and the combined forces of the Tau'ri, Free Jaffa Nation, Tok'ra, Lucian Alliance and the Asgard stood ready. Four Ori battlecruisers came through the gate and began attacking. Their vastly superior firepower and shields were detrimental to the fleet that had been assembled there. They began laying waste to all ships that stood in their way. At this time, Teal'c arrived with three Ha'tak vessels from the Lucian Alliance who he had gone to for assistance. Even with the extra help, the Milky Way forces were no match for the Ori fleet. The battle lasted only a few minutes wreaking massive damage on all ships and destroying the majority of them. [1]

[edit] Aftermath

Although exact casualties are not known, it is evident that almost all the Milky Way ships were destroyed or badly damaged. The Korolev was destroyed, as well as most, if not all, of the Jaffa and Tok'ra ships. Only one of the Lucian Alliance's ships is shown to have survived, but it was later destroyed by newly arrived Lucian Alliance Ha'tak vessels.

Mitchell had taken a F-302 from the Korolev and used it to get onboard the Odyssey, which had barely survived the battle. Carter was picked up by maneuvering her into the docking bay of the ship, and Teal'c was beamed off the Lucian Alliance ship just before it was destroyed. Only seven other people made it off of the Korolev: Daniel Jackson used a ring transporter to get onto one of the Ori ships, and six unknown people were "beamed" off before the explosion. [2] The fate of the Asgard ship is not known as it was only seen fighting the ships, but never destroyed or damaged. [1] All four Ori ships survived the battle unscathed. Their advanced shields prevented all weapons fire from reaching their hulls. The Odyssey had reported receiving distress beacons from several damaged ships, and being able to ring aboard a few survivors until they reached maximum capacity with the limited life support.

The apparent reason that some of the ships were left intact was that the Ori wanted witnesses to the battle who would spread the word of their victory. The purpose of the Ori invasion is to convert the whole galaxy to "Origin" rather than killing everyone.[2]

[edit] Closing the Supergate

Later the Supergate at P3Y-229 was activated by causing the wormhole to "jump" from a Stargate that had been positioned right next to the Supergate. In order to make this happen, a wormhole was established between the smaller Stargate and a Gate near a black hole in the Pegasus Galaxy. Subsequently, a nuclear explosion near the Stargate in the Pegasus Galaxy would create the jump.

The open wormhole prevented more Ori ships from coming through to the Milky Way. Also, when the gate was activated, the "kawoosh" (unstable vortex of plasma in an opening wormhole) struck the hull of an Ori Battlecruiser, destroying it. [3] The destruction of the ship meant there were only three Ori ships left in the Milky Way galaxy. A Wraith Hive Ship was also destroyed in the process. [1][3]

[edit] Making the Scene

Aside from the shots inside the individual ships, every shot in the scene was done using visual effects. The visual effects were done "in-house" as opposed to being done by Rainmaker Digital Effects as most Stargate SG-1 special effects scenes are. The producers of the show have expressed extreme satisfaction for how the scene turned out with Brad Wright saying, " I was just blown away, and jealous, by how good those shots were. Now we're fighting over the in-house vis-effects team." [4]
