Barnsley railway station (formely Barnsley Exchange Station) lies in the centre of the town of Barnsley, in South Yorkshire. The station was opened in 1850 and is 16 miles north of Sheffield. It is on both the Hallam Line and Penistone Lines operated by Northern Rail.
The railway station has two platforms and is linked to a large bus station which is known as the Barnsley Interchange.
Barnsley Interchange will also house the new bus station which is due to be opened in spring 2007.
[edit] Rail service
On the Hallam line during the day on Monday to Saturday, there are two trains per hour northbound to Wakefield Kirkgate and Leeds. During the evening and on Sundays there is generally an hourly service.
On the Penistone line there is an hourly service northbound to Huddersfield from Monday to Saturday and a two-hourly service on Sundays.
Southbound to Sheffield there are three trains per hour from Monday to Saturday, with one or two services per hour on Sundays.
There are also services to London St Pancras Station which are operated by Midland Mainline.
One service per hour is a 'Fast' service, this means it stops only at the major stations. One service operates Sheffield - Leeds and the other Leeds - Sheffield. These services are operated by Northern Rail and are mostly on Class 158 trains, recently introduced by Northern to ease congestion.
[edit] Bus station
The new bus station is currently being built on the original site. The new bus station is due for completion in Spring 2007 and will form the entire new complex of Barnsley Interchange, rail and bus users will exist the interchange via the new car park (currently the temporary bus station) or the new entrace and exit on Eldon Street. The bus station will feature the latest in technology such as the SYPTE, scheme of Your Next Bus, tracking buses with GPS to check what time they are due to arrive and depart. New shops will open inside the Interchange and the interchange will be very similar to the larger railway stations in the London area, featuring large waiting areas and modern features.
The all metal and glass structure currently stands with only framework, however work is proceeding to add glass to the building. Once completed it will blend in with the original railway building and offer a link between rail and bus passengers within minutes.
