Bangladesh Navy
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Bangladesh Navy has a strength of 24,000 personnel including 1,081 officers[1] (2005 estimate). It is mostly limited to coastal patrolling, but it is paying to have an ULSAN class frigate built in South Korea.

[edit] History
The Bangladesh Navy was forged in times of war. In 1971, with West Pakistan imposing a military rule in East Pakistan, the Bangladesh Liberation War was truly underway. Many Bengali sailors and officers in the Pakistan Navy defected to form the Bangladesh Navy. On 9 November 1971, the first naval fleet 'Bangabandhu Naubohar' consisting of six small ships was inaugurated. [2] Initially, there were two ships and 45 navy personnel. These ships tried to carry out raids on the Pakistani fleet but both the ships were mistakenly hit and sunk by Indian fighter planes on December 10 1971, when they were about to launch a major attack on Mongla seaport. According to official figures from Bangladesh, a total of 334 naval freedom fighters were involved with the fledgling navy with 22 becoming martyrs. [3] These sailors aided the Indian troops immensely as well as carrying out their own daring raids on Pakistani troops, mainly Operation Jackpot.
After the Liberation war and Bangladesh became an Independent nation, Bangladesh sought India's assistance to build its Navy. Seaward Defence Boats INS AKSHAY and INS AJAY were transferred to the Bangladesh Navy, which were then renamed BNS PADMA and BNS SURMA respectively. India also transferred three captured Pakistani merchant vessels, ANWAR BAKSH, MADHUMATI and PASNI to Bangladesh as a gesture of goodwill in 1973-74[4].
