Austin is located at 38°44′34″N, 85°48′34″W (38.742754, -85.809383)^GR1.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 6.3 km² (2.4 mi²), all land.

As of the census^GR2 of 2000, there were 4,724 people, 1,793 households, and 1,308 families residing in the town. The population density was 750.6/km² (1,946.4/mi²). There were 1,967 housing units at an average density of 312.5/km² (810.5/mi²). The racial makeup of the town was 98.20% White, 0.06% African American, 0.15% Native American, 0.19% Asian, 0.78% from other races, and 0.61% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 1.52% of the population.

There were 1,793 households out of which 36.8% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 51.0% were married couples living together, 16.8% had a female householder with no husband present, and 27.0% were non-families. 22.6% of all households were made up of individuals and 8.3% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.63 and the average family size was 3.06.

In the town the population was spread out with 29.1% under the age of 18, 10.5% from 18 to 24, 30.0% from 25 to 44, 20.6% from 45 to 64, and 9.8% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 32 years. For every 100 females there were 97.4 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 95.4 males.

The median income for a household in the town was $28,495, and the median income for a family was $33,267. Males had a median income of $28,468 versus $21,580 for females. The per capita income for the town was $12,431. About 16.6% of families and 19.1% of the population were below the poverty line, including 29.0% of those under age 18 and 15.6% of those age 65 or over.

James Blanton- A former Austin Eagles basketball star who still ranks among the top ten scorers in school history. Blanton went on to star at Dubuque College in Iowa, where he was an all-conference player. He currently works at Coronado Stone in Jeffersonville, Indiana.

Jack and John Morgan Jack Morgan passed the presidency to his son, John, on Sept. 5, 1974. Jack remained as chairman of the board until he died of pancreatic cancer in March of 1985. As a boy, John spent his time around the plant and never considered any other type of work. He graduated from the University of Cincinnati with a degree in business administration and started working at the factory full-time in the early 1970s. When he took over the Morgan presidency, he was just 27 years old. John Morgan has led Morgan Foods to its current focus on private-label soup and other mixed-ingredient products. By 1992, Morgan Foods had already joined Campbell’s as one of the nation’s three largest condensed soup manufacturers. Morgan's current business units focus on private label products. Anthony Winchester A four-year starter — and three-time all-stater — Winchester averaged 34.7 points, 13.5 rebounds and 4.7 assists as a senior for coach Scott Matthews’ 20-5 team at Austin High, leading the Eagles to the semifinals of the 2A state championship tournament ... For his efforts (he led the state in rebounding and was second in scoring), he was named first-team all-state and was the runner-up for Indiana’s Mr. Basketball award ... And, he took MVP honors in both the regional and sectional tournaments ... Completed his prep career as the AHS record holder, and 10th-leading career scorer in Indiana history, with 2,256 points ... Jodie Whitaker Indiana's Miss Basketball and Mental Attitude winner in 1985, Jodie knows the Indiana-Kentucky experience from both sides of the Ohio. She hit 15 points in the Hoosiers' 67-61 win in Lexington; she added 20 in a 74-71 loss a week later in Indianapolis. She graduated from Austin H.S. then went to the U. of Kentucky, where she is still in the top 10 in three stat categories. She coached two years at G. R. Clark in Winchester, KY then returned to Indiana and Lawrence North H.S. In her seven years there her teams are 91-67 and she's won three sectionals and was Marion County coach of the year in 2001 and ICGA District COTY in 2002.
