Ashwaubenon, Wisconsin

Ashwaubenon is a village in Brown County in the U.S. state of Wisconsin. As of the 2000 census, the village population was 17,634, however all village signs still reflect the 1990 census figure of 17,777. Ashwaubenon is a suburb of Green Bay, Wisconsin.

Ashwaubenon is located at (44.487158, -88.083284)GR1.
According to the United States Census Bureau, the village has a total area of 33.0 km² (12.7 mi²). 32.0 km² (12.4 mi²) of it is land and 1.0 km² (0.4 mi²) of it (2.90%) is water.
Ashwaubenon is bisected by Hwy 172, giving it a north side and a south side. As a general rule, the south side is more affluent, having more recent houses being built as the Village of Ashwaubenon continually buys more land from the neighboring village of Hobart.

Ashwaubenon takes its name from Chief Ashwaubamy, an Ottawa Indian adopted to the Menominee Indian Tribe. He was a chief that controlled some of the land and resources in the area in the early 1880's. Eventually the US Military bought most of the west side of Green Bay, Wisconsin from the Menominee in the 1850's and 60's, except the area that would later become Ashwaubenon. That land still belonged to Menominee and Chief Ashwaubamy and his two daughters owned land along the Fox River until they began selling it to local farmers and landowners in the late 1800's. Chief Ashwaubomay died in the 1820's.

As of the censusGR2 of 2000, there were 17,634 people, 7,137 households, and 4,667 families residing in the village. The population density was 550.4/km² (1,425.5/mi²). There were 7,260 housing units at an average density of 226.6/km² (586.9/mi²). The racial makeup of the village was 95.07% White, 0.65% African American, 1.25% Native American, 1.81% Asian, 0.02% Pacific Islander, 0.47% from other races, and 0.73% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 1.15% of the population.
There were 7,137 households out of which 33.5% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 53.9% were married couples living together, 8.3% had a female householder with no husband present, and 34.6% were non-families. 28.3% of all households were made up of individuals and 6.9% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.41 and the average family size was 3.00.
In the village the population was spread out with 25.3% under the age of 18, 9.2% from 18 to 24, 30.9% from 25 to 44, 23.6% from 45 to 64, and 11.1% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 36 years. For every 100 females there were 94.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 90.9 males.
The median income for a household in the village was $48,353, and the median income for a family was $62,186. Males had a median income of $41,024 versus $26,070 for females. The per capita income for the village was $23,539. About 3.4% of families and 4.0% of the population were below the poverty line, including 4.5% of those under age 18 and 3.5% of those age 65 or over.

The Ashwaubenon School District is comprised of one pre-school/kindergarten school, Cormier School, two elementary schools, Valley View and Pioneer School, one middle school, Parkview, and one high school, Ashwaubenon High School (AHS). AHS offers many Advanced Placement(AP) classes such as History, Art History, and U.S. Government. They also offer English 101 and 150 through St. Norbert College. The AHS marching band has an excellent reputation nationwide, performing at the 2001 Rose Bowl Parade, St. Patrick's Day Parade in New York, and in Hawaii in 2005, as does the award winning choir who has performed in Disney World, New Orleans, and New York City. The AHS football team has also been very successful, having won the state championship in 1996, 2000, 2001, and 2005. The AHS softball team has made more appearances in the state tournament than any other Wisconsin school with 16 trips to state. Ashwaubenon High School is the only school in the state to win three state championships in one year. In the 2005 - 2006 year the football, girls basketball, and softball teams all won state.

- Lambeau Field, home of the Green Bay Packers is carved out of a piece of the village of Ashwaubenon, which borders it on three sides. The outdoor practice fields and Don Hutson Center are all in Ashwaubenon. The Packers Hall of Fame was in Ashwaubenon until the latest remodeling.
- Bay Park Square is located in Ashwaubenon.
- Ashwaubenon includes part (pop. 907) of the Oneida Indian Reservation and part of the Austin Straubel International Airport.
- Ashwaubenon Public Safety Department Department has its full-time members triple trained, whether police officers, firefighters, EMTs or Paramedics. This is a very uncommon situation, which needed the Wisconsin legislature's approval to continue to be legal. Link
