Ashtamudi Lake

Ashtamudi Lake (Ashtamudi Kayal) is in Kollam district of Kerala state in south India. Ashtamudi means eight branches (Ashta=eight; mudi=branch) , in the local language Malayalam . This is indicative of the topography of this lake. That is a lake with multiple branches.Ashtamudi Lake is designated a wetland of international importance under the Ramsar Convention.
The Island Express also experienced a horrible railway accident when a large number of its coaches fell into Ashtamudi Kayal while crossing the railway bridge. Hundreds lost their lives. The driver of the train was later declared unfit for driving.
