Artsvashen
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Artsvashen (also known as Artzvashen or Bashkend) is an exclave of Armenia's Gegharkunik province. It is completely surrounded by Azerbaijan and has been controlled by it since the Nagorno-Karabakh War. The village was once linked geographically to the Democratic Republic of Armenia, but this corridor was transferred to Azerbaijan in 1931 by the Soviet Union as part of a series of border adjustments in the South Caucasus. During the Nagorno Karabakh war, this region too suffered from the hostilities. It was the site of many shootouts between Armenian and Azeri militaries, and there was at least one incident involving the ambush of 22 Armenian soldiers in the region by Armenian speaking Azeris. The enclave remained Armenian controlled until August of 1992, when 4,500 Armenians were evacuated by the Armenian army, and 12 Armenian soldiers were killed.
Today, the village is mostly inhabited by Azeris. It has been renamed Bashkend by the Azerbaijani government.
