Artist-run space

An artist-run space is a gallery space run by artists, thus circumventing the structures of public and private galleries. With its roots in the alternative salons of the early modern era, the phenomenon came to be important in the do-it-yourself era of post-Freeze British art.
The first artist-run space that came to public notice was The Vienna Secession, which was formed in 1897.
Other well-known artist-run spaces include City Racing (London), Sparwasser HQ (Berlin), Vitamin Creative Space (Guangzhou), 16 Beaver (New York), AV-ARKKI (Helsinki), Mercer Union (Toronto), p-10 (Singapore), Southern Exposure (San Francisco), Transmission Gallery (Glasgow), Total Kunst, Edinburgh amongst many others.
